Director Still Feels Warcraft Movie Sequel Is Hopeless

July 17, 2019 by Dennis Patrick

Despite having success in the box office, we still haven’t received a sequel to the Warcraft movie.

Whether you liked it or not, the Warcraft movie did well in the box office overall and it had a following of viewers that were eager to receive a sequel. It’s been a few years since it launched on the big screen and still, that announcement of a Warcraft sequel has yet to be unveiled. Recently, Collider spoke with the director behind the film, Duncan Jones, and according to the director, the chances of receiving a sequel is still pretty unlikely.

We could get into the fine details about the money and profits made by the Warcraft movie, but when it boils down to it, the money wasn’t as much as it should have been to warrant a sequel or even a third installment. Originally, the director had the idea of making this movie the first part of a full trilogy and it would have come packed with more information about Gul’dan and how the Orcs made their home in Azeroth. While the original film continues to become appreciated by viewers at home, critics and a low outcome in terms of sales within the North America box office likely had sealed the fate for this film franchise.

“For me, the story was about Gul’dan and taking the false walls. The symbol or the tribe that he was the chief of, taking them away from the world that was dying on setting them up with a new home on this, planet of Azeroth. And, really that was going to happen through his baby son who’s, for those who are lore junkies, was getting to grow up to be this character called Thrall. So really it was about, that story and everything else was how the orcs left their home world and clear that new home for themselves in Azeroth that was the three film arc I would’ve wanted to follow up.”

Duncan Jones went on to say that putting the film together was a massive process on its right as it was moved around a few different production companies. Again, while it may not have done well within North America, it did become a hit overseas and it’s a shame for viewers that enjoyed the movie to not get the intended sequels that the director had planned for. At any rate, this may have sparked plenty of gamers interest in going into the Warcraft video game franchise. Not only do you have the original strategy games but the MMORPG World of Warcraft to the hit card battling title, Hearthstone. If you’re interested in finding more about Duncan Jones and his plans for the Warcraft trilogy then we recommend checking out the full interview with Collider right here. However, if you’re only interested in finding out what the latest is in regards to the sequels, then we’re afraid that this movie adaptation is just a one-off.
