The Outer Worlds Dev: It is “a Big Challenge” to Produce a Game of This Scope During the Available Time
Obsidian Entertainment, the team known for South Park: The Stick of Truth and the Pillars of Eternity series, are currently working on The Outer Worlds. The game is a dystopian action RPG, and the footage we have seen so far looks promising. However, the team believes it was rather challenging to achieve the true scope of the project within the assigned timeframe.
During PAX East 2019, Lead Designer Charles Staples sat down with USGamer and talked from his own perspective and duties as a lead designer of The Outer Worlds. He continued to talk more on the challenges they had to overcome to produce a game of this quality within the available time. Of course, this means the development team had to ditch some ideas, features, gameplay systems and mechanics.
From my perspective as the lead designer, it’s been a big challenge of just trying to make the type of game we’re trying to do in the amount of time we have. We want to do a lot. There’s a lot of big ideas, and it’s a lot of systems, and a lot of different types of gameplay. It’s a lot of work to put it all together, and it’s been challenging, but I think the gameplay is coming together and it’s fun. We have fun playing it.
The Outer Worlds is scheduled for release later this year for PS4, Xbox One and PC.
