The Gran Turismo franchise might be the biggest Sony has up its sleeve, but don’t expect the simulation racing games to appear on every PlayStation console currently on the market. The sixth entry in the series, which will launch on PlayStation 3 this December, is a bit too graphically intensive for Vita, so there are no plans to bring the game to the handheld console in the near future.
This comes from Sony’s President of Worldwide Studios, Shuhei Yoshida, who recently spoke to IGN about Gran Turismo 6. There are plans to eventually move the project over to the PlayStation 4, but unfortunately, the Vita just isn’t powerful enough to handle a title that’s pushing its current platform to the limits.
“The PS Vita is a very powerful portable system, but not quite as powerful as PS3,” Yoshida said. “As you can tell looking at GT6, it really is using PS3 to a very high level. So it’s going to be really hard to move GT6 onto PS Vita.”
Gran Turismo games stay relevant long after release, so it’s only natural for developer Polyphony Digital to want to move the latest game to the PS4 after learning a bit more about the new hardware.
“But in terms of PS Vita support, I don’t expect the whole game to be able to run on PS Vita,” Yoshida continued. “So there are no clear plans right now that we can talk about.”
