Respawn: Titanfall Not Fantasy Sci-fi, Titans Could be Built

August 19, 2013 by Josiah Renaudin

For Respawn Entertainment, authenticity is a big sticking point.

Titanfall isn’t some fantasy without a single leg to stand on. Although you don’t see soldiers currently controlling giant, mechanized weapons of this ilk in combat, Respawn Entertainment designer Fairfax ‘Mackey’ McCandlish does believe that what his team is creating is highly conceivable in real life. The Titans can be built, and if you happened to visit E3 this year, you would have actually seen one in all its metallic glory.

“Titanfall isn’t fantasy sci-fi,” McCandlish told Edge. “You look at it and you believe this stuff could be built. At Respawn we have art guys from Infinity Ward, new guys from art school, and even guys from Sony Santa Monica, and they put a ton of research into it to make sure that these things could be built.”

The Xbox One exclusive might not spur the U.S. military to develop a whole new army of robots, but the Titans do allow for a unique gameplay experience that you won’t see in something like Call of Duty.

“Our game is still infantry-based,” McCandlish continued. “But it’s infantry on two different scales, so these maps are all carefully crafted to have all the strengths of a traditional shooter level, but with this scale disparity that you get between Titans and Pilots. If you’re a Pilot, we want you to feel you can turn the tide of a fight between two Titans, and if you spot a Titan looking the wrong way, you can scramble up the leg, rip off the panel and start tearing up the innards.”

The game was a hit at E3, and only seems to be getting better the more we hear about it.
