Nintendo slowly built up anticipation for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate character roster, with Street Fighter’s Ken and Pokemon’s Incineroar revealed back on the first of November. However, one specific character reveal really caused some heated arguments between fans of the title, Piranha Plant.
Fans criticised the addition of Piranha Plant over the likes of heavily fan-requested characters like Waluigi. However, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s director Masahiro Sakurai was recently featured in an interview with Game Informer, where he justified the studio’s decision. According to Sakurai, fighting games like these must offer characters “outside of people’s typical expectations,” instead of giving players the “typical “hero/heroine” type fighters”
“I believe it’s important to have a good balance as a game. In the past titles in the series, Mr. Game & Watch, R.O.B. and Duck Hunt Dog were some of the examples we offered outside of people’s typical expectations. If we don’t have these types of fighters, and we only had typical “hero/heroine” type fighters in the lineup […] it’s probably not very interesting. Correct? Also, unlike some main characters from some (not widely known) franchises, Piranha Plant is a character everyone knows well.”
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate releases on December 7 for the Nintendo Switch.
