Gamasutra has revealed that Nintendo of America has started using both physical and digital sales to determine top selling games on their video game consoles. For the physical sales data, Nintendo will still be using information provided by the NPD Group. For digital sales, Nintendo is adding their own information. This data is now reflective of listed Top Sellers on Nintendo's own games page today.

NPD earlier remarked that they would start tracking digital sales with retail, in partnership with the EEDAR. Nintendo's initiative is
preempting these plans, perhaps so that they can be more transparent about their own game sales to the public. NPD Group has received criticism for not providing an accurate picture of total game sales, while Nintendo has been abuzz about the high numbers they have been seeing for digital sales of their games, especially since they intensified online efforts on the 3DS and Wii U.
