Spelunky 2 Officially Announced; New Gameplay Trailer, Release Window, and More Detailed

Aug 30, 2018 Jordan Biazzo

The wait is finally almost over!

The PlayStation Blog has unveiled the highly anticipated roguelike sequel title Spelunky 2. After a long time of waiting, fans have finally received their first look at the game.

The gameplay trailer, which you can check out below, shows off some of the new characters —  Ana Spelunky, Margaret Tunnel, Colin Northward, and Roffy D. Sloth — while also managing to slip in a release window for eager fans. Sadly, the game is scheduled for a 2019 release window, so there is a little more waiting to be done.

Check out the new gameplay trailer for the highly anticipated sequel down below:

Fans of the roguelike title can get an early feel for the game if they are heading to PAX West this weekend. Spelunky 2 will be available to try out at the booth on the showfloor, so if you’re there make sure to swing by the booth and give it a go!

In addition to the gameplay trailer and release window, the PlayStation Blog had an in-depth chat with creator of Spelunky, Derek Yu. Yu had some very interesting statements and decisions about the sequel, but the best one out of the interview was about why didn’t he and the team create a sequel that was more safe to the original and not so drastically different.  Here’s what he had to say about that:

At its core, Spelunky 2 is not too different, actually. My opinion about sequels is that they are extensions of the previous games, so I want fans of Spelunky 1 to jump in and feel like they’re playing a continuation, both storywise and mechanically. The big question on my mind was “What makes Spelunky, Spelunky?” I wanted to figure out what those ideas were and take them to their limit without anything getting in their way. Sometimes that means adding, sometimes that means remixing – it can also mean subverting expectations created by the original game.

If you want to read more of the interview, make sure to head over to PlayStation Blog!

Spelunky 2 is set to launch sometime in 2019 for the PS4. Are you excited for the sequel title? Let us know what you think about it so far in the comments below!
