FromSoftware Reaffirms End of Dark Souls Franchise; Studio Wants to Take on ‘Fresh Experiences’

FromSoftware’s most iconic franchise, Dark Souls, saw its end with its third instalment, Dark Souls III. Dark Souls is FromSoftware’s fastest selling title in the studio’s history, managing to record over three million sales in less than two weeks. This sales performance prompted the studio to recently announce Dark Souls: Trilogy.

President Hidetaka Miyazaki made sure to let the fans know that after the game’s final and second DLC expansion, The Ringed City, he wants to take the studio to a new direction. FromSoftware’s Promotion and Communications Manager Yasuhiro Kitao reaffirmed Miyazaki’s thoughts during an interview with VG247 at Gamescom  2018. He mentioned Miyazaki’s statements in previous interviews on the Dark Souls series being finished, and discussed the studio’s plans to “keep creating these fresh experiences.”

We plan to make a variety of different titles and fresh experiences. We’re not just going to be making shinobi games going forward. But as far as Miyazaki has said in interviews previously, the Dark Souls series is finished. That said, we do want to keep creating these fresh experiences, and just games we want to make –so please stay tuned.

Dark Souls Remastered is now available for PS4, Xbox One and PC. On the other hand, the studio’s upcoming title, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, releases on March 22, 2019 for PS4, Xbox One and PC.
