Journey, a smash indie hit on PlayStation Network last year, has finally become profitable to the point where ThatGameCompany – the title's creators – are earning royalties on sales.
Jenova Chen, the game's director, revealed that Journey was profitable in a retrospective interview with FamilyGamerTV.
"It seems that Journey sales are not really going away. I'm quite curious to see what happens this quarter," Chen commented.
In February Chen revealed that the studio was bankrupt when Journey shipped – over a year later than initially planned. During the game's extended development process "A lot of people weren't paid. We also went bankrupt as a company."
ThatGameCompany used most of its contingency resources to see the game shipped which saw the developers dig deep into their savings and bank accounts.
Journey was recently released at retail in Europe along with Flow and Flower – ThatGameCompany's other PS3 exclusive titles. The studio has said its next project will not be tied to a PlayStation platform.
Chen has previously commented on how important it was to finish the game despite ThatGameCompany's troubles saying Journey has had a powerful effect on many of those who have played it.
In March, Journey won an award in all six categories into which it had been entered at the Developers' Choice Awards.
We awarded the game 9.8 in our review.
