Sony: The Number of Developers Working on PS4 is Over 500

June 17, 2013 by Stephen Daly

Developers working on PS4 up from 126 to 505 since February.

In a press release sent out over the weekend Sony revealed some specifications of the PS4 but also went into detail on the developers involved making games for the system.

The biggest news to emerge is the fact that "Since February 2013 (when the console was announced), the number of developers joining has increased from 126 to 505."

Most of these developers are presumably indies lured by Sony's policies of not requiring a publisher and not charging game patch fees. At the current point in time, Microsoft does require a publisher and charges fees for game patching for both Xbox 360 and Xbox One.

Even so, it's an impressive number. Among the indie games being developed for PS4 are The Witness, Ray's the Dead, Oddworld: New 'n' Tasty, Transistor and Octodad. At present, they are all intended as console exclusives.

Sony also reiterated some of the comments made about internal development at the company's E3 media briefing. The release comments "from SCE Worldwide Studios, more than 30 titles, including 12 brand new IP are under development. Out of over 30 titles under development, 20 titles will be available within a year from the PS4 launch."

Titles being developed internally include The Order: 1886, inFAMOUS Second Son, Killzone: Shadow Fall and Knack.

The 30 games in development at Sony is double the 15 titles being developed internally at Microsoft. Of Microsoft's 15 in-development games eight are new IP.
