The PlayStation 4 is Region Free

June 11, 2013 by Stephen Daly

There will be no restrictions on importing games from another region on PS4.

Sony Worldwide Studios President Shuhei Yoshida has confirmed on Twitter that the PlayStation 4 is a region free device meaning you'll be able to import games for the system from anywhere in the world. He simply commented:

And yes, PS4 is region free 😀

— Shuhei Yoshida (@yosp) June 11, 2013

This is particularly good news for those looking to upgrade to a next generation console as Microsoft has already confirmed that the Xbox One does not have this feature.

A Sony representative informed Joystiq: "In general, neither digital or disc-based games will be region locked, but we recommend users purchase games in the regions of their residence to guarantee the best overall consumer experience (eg, customer service). In addition, certain software makers' game titles may be region locked."

Yoshida's revelation comes after Sony's pre-E3 press conference in which the company undermined many of Microsoft's next generation policies. The PS4 does not have any of the used game, game renting or game lending restrictions of the Xbox One and unlike Microsoft's console the PS4 does not need to be connected to the internet.

In addtion, the PS4's HDD can be upgraded as is the case with the PS3, Xbox One owners will not be able to change their system's HDD.

The PS4 launches this holiday season worldwide for $399 – $100 cheaper than the Xbox One.
