Markus Persson, better known as Notch, has announced that Minecraft will be officially ported to Apple's iOS platform for the iPad and iPhone. Speaking to Gamasutra, Persson said that the port will be handled by newly recruited Aron Nieminen.

The ports will not be as complex as their PC and Mac counterpart, instead focusing on elements that would work well on a touch-based device. Pending final approval from Apple, Minecraft is expected to hit the App Store in 2011.

If Minecraft does well on the iOS, there's no telling where else the game could head.
