This Is Why Nintendo Labo Uses Cardboard

February 12, 2018 by Jordan Coetsee

The fun is in the ‘trial-and-error’.

When the Nintendo Labo was first revealed a couple weeks back, fans were sceptical whether or not the cardboard material would be durable enough. In a recent Q&A with investors, Nintendo Director Shinya Takahashi discussed why exactly the team chose cardboard over any other material.

According to Takahashi, when the team was in the in the process of making the robot prototype – the team found the ‘trial and error’ aspect of constructing it fun “That led our concept for Nintendo Labo to be developed as something that people could enjoy in all of its aspects, not just in playing with the finished product, but also in making some repairs along the way and after it is complete and in understanding the mechanics,” he stated.

The Nintendo Labo is set to sell for $70 – $80 a piece and will include game cartridges with the kit. What’s more, if anyone happens to break their LABO, Nintendo has offered free replacements.

With Nintendo Labo, building is just as much fun as playing. Have fun discovering how it all works—you might even invent new ways to play with each Toy-Con creation.
