Blood Bowl Getting A Football Manager Spin Off

March 7, 2013 by Matt Hawkins

It’s ultimate mash-up of casual and hardcore and football.

Familiar with the sport of Blood Bowl? No, it's not related to the 16-bit classic, Mutant League Football, but that’s a close enough guess. Instead, it's a fantasy football game that takes place in the Warhammer universe.

As such, it's the classic game of American pigskin, except with elves, goblins, dwarves, trolls, and orcs. Which again doesn’t sound too far removed from the old Genesis game from EA,

Also, due to its roots, Blood Bowl is primarily a board game, though there have been two video game adaptations thus far. And a third one is waiting in the wings, Blood Bowl: Star Coach.

Though, as PCGamesN explains, you won't be controlling your team and their matches directly. Instead, you're selecting the roaster, crafting the playbook, and other activities which are the norm in most Football Manager sims.

The game will be a free to play browser experience, and players can go head to head with others via PC, Mac, or tablet. It's date later this year, sometime between April and June.

Games that are normally associated with a decidedly hardcore audience are often retrofitted to conform to a gameplay style that's associated with the audience, but Blood Bowl might be the most extreme example yet.

It'll be interesting to see how those who general deal with Farmville or Mafia Wars react to Star Coach. Additionally, if it does well enough, perhaps we’ll finally see the return of Mutant League Football? There are many who have been patiently waiting one, even two years later.
