Mew-Genics Was Born at a Game Jam, Will Be on Steam

February 4, 2013 by Jordan Erica Webber

Team Meat paused work on Super Meat Boy sequel to focus on this cat-based game

In the latest teaser for upcoming game Mew-Genics, creators Edmund McMillen and Tommy Refenes (a.k.a. Team Meat) have announced that the game will be available on Steam, which is the second platform they have revealed after announcing the game would be on iPad “and other platforms”. It's hardly an unexpected announcement, since Super Meat Boy is also available on Steam, and McMillen concedes that when he says” “Well one of those other platforms is going to be Steam, obviously!”

So the more interesting part of this latest blog post is the brief history of the game that comes next. It turns out that Team Meat was actually working on the next Super Meat Boy, but put the game on hold when Mew-Genics started to take shape. The prototype for the game was created during the game jam Ludum Dare 24, following the themes of “Evolution” and “100 Cats”, but McMillen and Refenes saw promise in its “underlying theme we hadnt seen done in games before” and so paused the Super Meat Boy sequel to focus on it full time.

For those wondering what that underlying theme is, you'll have to wait a little longer. Mew-Genics is only 18 weeks into development so several of the features haven't been quite worked out yet, which explains why the teasers have been fairly vague. In fact, the pair will only release two more of these teasers so that they can focus on finishing the game and announcing the principles behind it properly. So at least we can look forward to finally finding out what this game is actually about.
