Micro-transactions always result in a heated discussion, whether it’s for or against their existence in video games. Former Bungie developer Niles Sankey, known for his work on Halo and Destiny, shared his own opinion on the matter, and shows another perspective on the matter.
In a recent interview with GamesIndustry, Sankey mentioned that in the end everyone involved within the gaming industry has a family to feed and micro-transactions offer an extra stream of revenue for the company. He offered a very simple solution, if you don’t like micro-transactions, then simply don’t buy them.
Developers have retirement to save for and families to feed… If people don’t like loot crates and microtransactions, they shouldn’t support the game by purchasing them. And I’d suggest not buying games made by companies that have previously demonstrated insincere business practices.
I stopped developing investment heavy games and I no longer play them. In my opinion, there are better ways to spend your time and life. There are so many great non-addictive/investment games to play.. and there’s so much more to life than video games.
Sankey’s statement is really interesting. However, some games feature micro-transactions that give players an edge over non-paying players, do you think it’s fair to implement micro-transactions that gives paying users an advantage?
