Brian Fargo Shares His Ideas for a New Torment Game

January 16, 2013 by Jordan Erica Webber

The game will have a new location, and be funded at least partially through Kickstarter

In an interview with Now Gamer, Brian Fargo has provided some conceptual details on inXile Entertainment's plan to combine the feel of Planescape: Torment with the pen-and-paper world of Numenera. While he says that the new Torment game is in “very, very early” preproduction stages, he seems to have a pretty clear idea of what the team wants to achieve.

For one thing, he insists that replacing the world of Planescape with that of Numenera is no bad thing, since the core idea to come out of Planescape: Torment is that of “the philosophical journey of a single character searching for meaning in a deeply personal story of self-reflection and self-realization”, something which can clearly take place in a variety of settings.

But the Numenera artwork shows a world of light and rolling hills, which doesn't really fit with the theme. So the team is exploring how to make things much darker; see the concept art above.

As well as the setting, inXile Entertainment is also considering using a new combat system. The team plans to start with the Numenera system and then shape it to fit with the game, with feedback from backers influencing decisions. The RPG will be at least partially funded through Kickstarter; we'll let you know when the campaign goes live.
