Dance for Free Coca-Cola with Kinect Vending Machines

January 9, 2013 by Jeanine Celestin-Greer

Yes, really

Coca-Cola has thought of another way to get attention on their product: install webcams and Microsoft Kinect sensors into their vending machines, have you dance and generally act in an embarrassing manner in the chance that you might get a free soda.

Apparently a video of the machine being used in South Korea has gone viral with over a million views. In a stroke of marketing genius, the machine show cases a video of Korean boy band 2PM getting bystanders' attention and then encouraging bystanders to make the same movements they are. As you can see below, the already popular boy band had no problem getting the audience to participate, even if they weren't really there.

If you'll notice, the Coca-Cola machine quickly becomes the center of attention and garners a large audience who can't wait for their chance to try and get a coke. The potential for advertising is huge, as they reach a completely captivated audience of hundreds of people in a day for price of the Kinect and a few sodas.

It's clear that we're right on the edge of a new age where it's normal and common to interact with machines, robots and technology in general for both advertiser's needs, our own desire to have fun and convenience. And it seems that video games and their innovation will be right at the forefront of that era, with their ability to keep audiences entertained and engaged through technology.
