Sony CEO Doesn’t Appear Worried About Low Vita Sales or Its New Competitors

January 8, 2013 by Jeanine Celestin-Greer

Kaz Hirai shrugs off the competition

Sony CEO Kaz Hirai spoke rather candidly to The Wall Street Journal at the latest Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. If he indeed represents Sony, then Sony's stance on mobile gaming is one of calm, cool, collected patience.

On the topic of Vita sales, Hirai was honest, but undeterred.  "I would say it's on the low end of what we expected." But he pointed out that he would wait 5-10 years to gauge a product's success, saying, "Long term is what is important," noting out that the PS3 also went throrough a slump–one so bad it was a financial failure for the company at first, but years later began to turn a profit.

On the topic of Nvidia's Project Shield Hirai seemed even less concerned.

"I wasn't as surprised as you might think," Hirai said, according to PC World. "If you look back through the pages of history, there have been other attempts. It's difficult to break into. I've managed this industry, so I know."

One has to wonder what he would say about Razer's latest entry into the mobile sector, has the dual ability to play PC games and mobile games. If I had to guess, I'd say Hirai still wouldn't be worried. Sony has no doubt seen its fair share of competitors come and go over the years.
