GaymerCon Becomes Both Gaymer X And GaymerConnect

After successfully securing the finances to run the very first convention that would cater towards the LGBTQ geek community, GaymerCon found itself facing a trademark dispute. Apparently, Chris Vizzini, the owner of gaymer.org, had trademarked the name, and even sent a cease-and-desist letter to Reddit over their r/gaymer subreddit.

So it was somewhat inevitable that GaymerCon would change names, though two different ones is a bit of a surprise. First, the convention is no longer GaymerCon and is now GaymerX. The following explains the reason for the name change:

The organization also has a new name: GaymerConnect. The reasons for this other name change is clarified in this statement, which explains that its due to a trademark dispute with Gam3rcon, which has copy written the gamer “Gamercon” and all phonetic deviations.

Apparently, since the launch of the GaymerCon Kickstarter, there had been discussions regarding a shared usage agreement. One that eventually could not be agreed upon, hence the decision for the changes.

It was also noted that none of it had anything to do with Vizzini. Gaymer X will take place in San Francisco, on August 3-4, 2013.
