John Carmack: A Lot of Next-Gen Games Will Still Target 30 FPS

December 18, 2012 by Alex Co

John Carmack, head of id Software, can “pretty much guarantee” that next-gen games will still target 30 frames-per-second.

If you think that once the PS4 and Xbox 720 comes around that all console games will be at 60 frames-per-second (fps), think again. John Carmack, founder of id Software and developer of notable games such as DOOM, Wolfenstein, Quake and Rage can "pretty much guarantee" that a lot of next-gen games will still target 30fps.

This was said by Carmack over on Twitter, where he answered a fan's concern that with the next-gen rumored to be powerful, does he think a lot of games will still be at 30 fps.

unfortunately, I can pretty much guarantee that a lot of next gen games will still target 30fps.

Mind you, Carmack is one of the visionaries when it comes to gaming development, so I gather that when he says something like this, there is some truth to it. Heck, I wouldn't be surprised if he's saying this since he has already seen the development kits for the next-gen platforms.

While Sony and Microsoft have yet to reveal any of their next-gen hardware specs, it's been heavily-rumored that it will be as powerful as today's current gaming PCs and with that in mind, people assumed that 60fps' would be a lock on almost all games. Unfortunately, that doesn't seem to be the case…if Carmack is to be believed, anyway.

Is this news a cause for concern or are 60 frames-per-second just a bulletpoint most studios use to hype their games? Also, if given the choice, would you want the next-gen's horsepower to push never-before-seen visuals or be allocated to make sure each game's framerate is at a steady 60fps?

Thanks, NeoGAF
