Borderlands 2 the Year’s Most Played “New” Game According to Raptr

Gearbox Software’s Borderlands 2 is the most played new game in 2012 according to Raptr.

Raptr, the social networking website aimed at videogame players, has revealed that Gearbox's Borderlands 2 was the Most Played New Game of the Year on the Xbox 360 and PC across its 15 million members.

Borderlands 2, which also won a handful of awards at the Spike Video Game Awards show, amassed 200% more playtime in its first month compared to its nearest competitor, which is Blizzard's Diablo 3. 

Counting games that were released before 2012, Activision's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 emerged as the Most Played Game, beating the likes of League of Legends and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

Here are the complete 2012 Raptr award winners:

  • · Most Played New Game – Borderlands 2 (Gearbox/2K Games)

  • · Most Played Game (Released Anytime) – Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (Treyarch/Activision)

  • · Biggest Boost from User-Generated Content – Portal 2 (Valve)

  • · Most Played Long-Awaited Sequel – Borderlands 2 (Gearbox/2K Games)

  • · No Bathroom Break – Borderlands 2 (Gearbox/2K Games)

  • · Most Played XBLA Game – Minecraft (4J Studios/Mojang)

  • · Most Played New IP – Dragon’s Dogma (Capcom)

  • · Most Successful Paid to Free-to-Play Game – Star Wars: The Old Republic (BioWare/EA)

Particularly surprising is Capcom's Dragon's Dogma edging out the likes of Dishonored and other new IPs released this year. Also, BioWare's Star Wars: The Old Republic is the most "successful" F2P game. While that's a distinct honor, I doubt EA is that happy that its multi-million-developed game is lumped in the F2P category.

It's not really needed at this point, but another congrats are in order for the folks over at Gearbox and well deserved, too. Can they replicate the same magic when their next game — Aliens: Colonial Marines — releases in February of 2013 for SEGA? Let's hope so.
