Rocket League Devs Are Bothering Sony “Every Day” About Cross-Play

June 29, 2017 by Jordan Coetsee

Maybe one day Sony will let up…

During E3 this year Psyonix announced that their title, Rocket League will be featuring a long awaited addition, crossplay between consoles – unfortunately, there was one brand missing from the list of featured consoles, Sony’s PS4.

Psyonix has managed to get Nintendo and Microsoft on board with the idea, and aren’t letting up until Sony joins the party.

According to Psyonix’s Jeremy Dunham, Sony’s response has continuously been ‘Not right now”, ‘It’s something we’ll consider.’ or variations of the two. Dunham went on to state that ever since Rocket League’s initial launch on the PS4 in 2015, a member of Psyonix has asked Sony about the possibility “every single day”. While I’m sure it hasn’t been exactly everyday but it still goes to show Psyonix tenacity to try get Sony aboard.

This hasn’t been the only game Sony has denied cross-play functionality from, the hit game Minecraft is also on the list of titles that won’t be networking with other consoles. The company’s reasoning for that particular denial was made ‘clear’ by Jim Ryan during E3, wherein which he stated the following: “We’ve got to be mindful of our responsibility to our install base. Minecraft–the demographic playing that … it’s all ages but it’s also very young….We have a contract with the people who go online with us, that we look after them and they are within the PlayStation curated universe. Exposing what in many cases are children to external influences we have no ability to manage or look after, it’s something we have to think about very carefully.”

For the time being, we’ll have to wait and see what Sony says. Let’s hope Psyonix doesn’t let up anytime soon!
