Nintendo: Sony and Microsoft “Need” to React to Us

November 27, 2012 by Alex Co

Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo of America president, thinks Microsoft and Sony should react to them and figure out how they’ll innovate.

Now that the Wii U is out, it seems Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime is taking the kid gloves off, so to speak. In a recent interview with CNET, Fils-Aime was asked whether the thought the Wi U would face "irrelevancy" issues once Sony and Microsoft launch their own next-gen platforms.

Fils-Aime comments that Sony and Microsoft should "react" to them, and even thinks that "faster processors" and "pretty pictures" won't be enough to motivate consumers.

In the end, our competitors need to react to what we're doing in the marketplace and need to figure out what their innovation will be…It's likely that faster processors and pretty pictures won't be enough to motivate consumers. They need to react to what we've done and we need to continue innovating with the Wii U and we will.

Reggie also refutes claims that the Wii U is Nintendo's way of "catching up" to today's HD-capable consoles and thinks that a new hardware should mean new experiences.

For us, launching new systems is about bringing new consumer experiences to the marketplace and we're doing that with Nintendo land and third-party publishers are doing it with games like ZombiU. For us, now is the right time to launch new hardware.

It's easy to say that the Wii U will be irrelevant once the PS4 and Xbox 720 are released, but for now, Nintendo's next-gen console is selling out and I gather, Fils-Aime is worrying more about keeping up with supply, than with Sony and Microsoft's next-gen plans, no?

Do you agree with Fils-Aime that Sony and Microsoft should react to them and not the other way around? How do you think the Wii U will fare once the the PS4 and Xbox 720 is out on store shelves? Will it go the way of the original Wii again?
