Ubisoft CEO Open to Acquiring Some of THQ’s “Assets”

November 13, 2012 by Alex Co

Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot acknowledges that he’s interested in acquiring some of THQ"s franchises if the company sells them off.

THQ's financial hardships are still continuing. It's gotten to the point that some people are expecting the company to file bankruptcy any day now or just to close shop.

In saying that, THQ does have a few franchises that are worth saving. Could the publisher sell these IPs to pay off their debts? If they indeed do this, it won't be the first time, as they've already sold their UFC license to EA and even some of its upcoming games, have been auctioned off.

One publisher who's interested in a few of THQ's IPs is none other than Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot. In an interview with GamesIndustry, Guillemot admitted that he's open to considering snatching some of THQ's IPs if and when the troubled publisher starts selling their assets off.

They have good things…We are always interested in good brands. For sure, it's something we can consider, but I can't tell you more.

So which brand is it? Darksiders? Homefront? Sadly, we don't know for sure since Guillemot declined to say which ones he's interested in.

Regarding THQ's financial troubles, Guillemot comments that this is something that happens regularly whenever companies transition from one console generation to the next. He likens it to how Atari, Acclaim and Midway — companies I'm sure THQ CEO Brian Farrell doesn't want to THQ to be aligned with.

What happened to [THQ] is something that happens regularly when we have transition…Some can make it, some decide to go in different direction. It happened with Atari and Midway and also Acclaim last generation. … It's something that happens in this industry and that's the way the industry consolidates.

Up to now, it's still a big question mark if THQ can last until the year's done. Either that or if they can still release one more AAA game. If so, hopefully it will sell considerably this time around, no?

If THQ does close up shop and sells off their franchises, which ones would you want Ubisoft to acquire? If not them, would you want EA or Activision involved in this picture? Let us know in the comments.
