Video Game Sales Decline For the 11th Month in a Row

November 9, 2012 by Nick Lalone

Shrinking, Shrinking, Shrinking, Shrinking, Shrieking

Research firm NPD Group release a statement today stating that the US sale of video game hardware and software fell 25% in October. This is the 11th straight month that video game sales have decreased. Sales fell to $755.5 Million from $1 Billion a year earlier.

For software, NPD said that (excluding PC games), sales fell by 37% while the sale of accessories grew by 5%.

NPD gave the final top 10 list of best-selling games in October. They were:

  • NBA 2K13,” Take-Two Interactive Software Inc.

  • Resident Evil 6,” Capcom USA

  • Pokemon Black Version 2,” Nintendo Co.

  • Dishonored,” Bethesda Softworks

  • Pokemon White Version 2,” Nintendo Co.

  • Madden NFL 13,” Electronic Arts Inc.

  • FIFA Soccer 13,” Electronic Arts Inc.

  • Medal of Honor: Warfighter,” Electronic Arts Inc.

  • Borderlands 2,” Take-Two Interactive Software Inc.

  • Skylander Giants,” Activision Blizzard Inc.

In console sales, Microsoft outsold all console sales again in the United States coming in at 270,000 Xbox's. It is worth noting that this is the 22nd month in a row that Microsoft has top console sales charts.

It will be interesting to see how the Wii U, Halo 4, and Call of Duty change these numbers as we head into the holiday season. One final note to this is that around 25% of the gamers NPD Group surveyed said that they only play games on mobile devices (Cell Phones, Vita, 3DS, etc).
