Capcom to Expand by Hiring 1,000 New Devs

November 6, 2012 by Jeanine Celestin-Greer

In the next 10 years, you could be working at Capcom

Capcom realizes the quality of its recent games hasn’t always been the best, nor the most consistent. To hopefully rectify that, they announced on an investor Q&A on their official site that they would be cutting out the middle man. Or in other words, they will be cutting down on dependence on outside developers like the latest Devil May Cry’s Ninja Theory and relying on their own internal development to make their games.

Specifically, they’ve got a few big target numbers to increase their development team by a ton. “Our goal is to increase the number of developers by 1,000 over the next 10 years,” said Capcom. “We want to further improve the quality of our games by maintaining an internal game development team.”

The games industry hasn’t been doing too well as a whole, with numerous studios shutting down along with massive layoffs. But Capcom seems invigorated by their recent earnings report, which showed Resident Evil 6 and Dragon’s Dogma as selling well, leading to their best-ever earnings for the first half of a fiscal year. Even still, they don’t believe embarking on such a massive hiring spree will really affect them financially negatively.

“The purpose of increasing our game developer team is to create a larger percentage of our games internally,” Capcom explained. “Therefore, we believe that there will be no significant change in total development expenditures mainly because we will be shifting outsourced operations to our own workforce.”
