Nintendo Kills Off Zelda Fan Game Breath of the NES

Developer plans to continue his work.

You might recall our post earlier last month on a fan game for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. A developer and creator, Winter Drake, has been working on a prototype top-down version of the latest Zelda installment to release by Nintendo after seeing the initial development process for the critically acclaimed hit.

Uploaded as a demo and an announcement for gamers online, Winter Drake unveiled The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the NES on itch.io. The demo showed off a few aspects of the video game though a major update for the demo was set to launch at some point this week.

Unfortunately, that update will never surface as Nintendo was quick to takedown the project. We all pretty much assumed this was going to be the end result for the project. Nintendo is notorious for taking down fan projects online that take any liberties from their IPs. Even YouTube content creators have issues when it comes to showcasing Nintendo’s video games for reviews or let’s plays.

At any rate, Winter Drake got in touch with Kotaku and revealed that the project is still very much in the works. Despite receiving a takedown, Winter Drake already made plans if Nintendo opted to kill the project off.

Instead of using Nintendo’s IP, Winter Drake will change some of the aspects of Breath of the NES and make it more of an original title. Because this has all happened today, we’ll likely not see any big teaser or announcements for the video game project for some time. Although, Winter Drake has stated an interest to Kotaku of making a Kickstarter campaign once he has enough content to show off his project.
