Gearbox Develops Patch to Stop Xbox 360 Hackers

October 28, 2012 by Jeanine Celestin-Greer

Gearbox to the rescue

Xbox 360 players are at risk for getting their save files infected. Basically, the so-called infection or glitch would turn your save into graveyard.sav. At this point, you would never respawn upon dying and go into a free roam camera. If you try to reload, or turn off your Xbox or basically anything, your save data would be completely gone forever. The modding community was blamed for this "glitch" and though at first it wasn't known if it was malicious or not, Gearbox has recently come forward to make a statement about it.

"Recently a few users have begun violating the Xbox Live Code of Conduct by using an external application to maliciously disrupt the experience and sabotage characters of legitimate Borderlands 2 players on Xbox 360."

Therefore, since it has been identified as a malicious attack, Gearbox advises players with information to come forward and report anything they may know to [email protected]. In the meantime, Gearbox has created a patch and has submitted it to Microsoft for certification. It is unknown when it will be released and able to be applied, but Gearbox had a few tips for Xbox 360 players to protect themselves and practice safe gaming:

  • Consider to play only with "trusted individuals" and avoid public sessions.
  • Before ending a gameplay session, select Save and Quit from the pause menu while your character is alive.
  • If your character dies and you find yourself at the main menu instead of respawning, immediately select Continue to resume playing as that character.

Stay safe out there and we’ll be the first to let you know when the patch is issued.
