Ubisoft: Wii U Gamepad is More Advanced Than You May Think

Wii U Gamepad’s tech is impressive.

Rayman creator Michel Ancel was one of the first people to jump on the Wii U bandwagon, so it seems likely he'd have a lot of experience with the hardware, right?

Speaking with Nintendo Power, Ancel talked a bit about how impressive the technology behind the Wii U's GamePad is. He says that the response time is "crazy", thanks to extremely low latency–1/60 of a second to be exact. Ancel says that the technology is more advanced that what people might think and that competitors will need to catch up to get their controllers so fast.

"And I think this is where Nintendo is really out in front of things. The technology inside the controller is quite a bit more advanced than what people might think. It’s really responsive. The response time is crazy, in fact, and I think the competitors will need some time to [get their solutions] this responsive."

Ancel also had some compliments for the frame rates on controller, particularly amazing because the HD game is streaming directly to the GamePad.

“It’s crazy because the game is running in full HD [on the television], we are streaming another picture on the GamePad screen, and it’s still 60 frames per second. And the latency on the controller is just 1/60 of a second, so it’s one frame late. It’s crazy, it’s so fast. It’s almost instant. That’s why it responds so well. So it can be used as a real game-design thing.”

Even if you're not a Wii U fan, it's good news. It means that the bar has been raised and we are on our way to saying goodbye to lag.
