The burning question everyone’s minds is how good is Your Shape compared to a real trainer. The answer is that it’s pretty close – no fitness video game is a substitute for a real-life trainer, but Your Shape aims to change that drastically thanks to its constant feedback and variety of exercise plans.

Your Shape is truly Fitness Evolved in not only name, but in nature as well, and it presents a great opportunity for people to workout in their own homes with their own fitness tracker and personal trainer. I find it hard to believe that it will replace gyms and your general workout regime for anyone who is currently active already in these fields, but it makes a perfect supplement, and for those who want to do more, this is the perfect tool. It’s another title that does suffer from play space issues, as it asks you stand a couple of metres away from the device if you’re six foot like myself, and aside from the odd issue with it not picking up your actions, Your Shape is most definitely fitness evolved.

Your Shape is an great showcase for fitness software on Xbox 360. There’s not been anything like it before so it’s hard to make any comparisons, or know where improvements could be made. There are very few niggles with one being the timing can be a little off on occasion where, the on screen trainer appears out of sync with the music and your rating lower than expected even if you’re performing the moves correctly. There could have been a few more activities, and certainly a lot more group games and activities but this is nit picking really.

Shape: Fitness Evolved offers more than a workout. Though you’ll still do reps (many involving permutations of the evil, evil squat), the game feels very much like walking into an elaborate yoga studio: it provides a whole experience beyond its three branches of activities. More than just an interactive exercise video, it’s pretty and pleasing, too, with an attractive Kinect-only interface that handles surprisingly well.

Overall, Your Shape Fitness Evolved has really impressed me these last few days. As far as I’m concerned, this is the new gold standard in fitness gaming — no Wii Fit shenanigans or holding controllers to deal with. Playing with Kinect, at least in this application, is simply far more intuitive and enjoyable.

Your Shape: Fitness Evolved won’t replace your professional fitness membership. However, as a well-thought out complement to your sedentary gaming habits, what Ubisoft offers is worth the detour.

This not only gives the game a feel for your fitness level, but it lets them know how good you are at the game so it can plan accordingly. When the Xbox Live Indie Games Winter Uprising was announced, I got really excited. The Indie Games channel on the Xbox Marketplace is often maligned or, worse, ignored by people due to the misconception that everything on the service is crap. And while it’s true that a good 90% of the titles that go up are mediocre at best, there are some real gems available.

The online statistics and achievements are a great way of keeping you motivated as well as the ability to share records with friends. It isn’t quite perfect and has a number of other launch fitness titles to compete with, but as it stands if you feel the pounds are piling on or if you want to complement your gym visits or daily exercise, Your Shape is the perfect way to feel happy and healthy this winter.

The problem of lag also occurs now and again, usually on the faster workouts. The game keeps track of whether you are following a routine well via rhythm – you’re always asks to move to a beat. During quick movements – for example, punching left and right – your mirror image will be a good half-a-second behind you, and won’t be moving properly to the beat, which can be hopelessly confusing, and inevitably put you off. Learning to focus on the music rather than your image can be difficult.

The underlying technology and use of Kinect is impressive, it’s just that the package as a whole seems a little undercooked – and is likely to look even more so next to EA Sports Active 2.0. It’s still a good launch purchase though, if you’re in a real hurry to shed a few pounds.

Your Shape: Fitness Evolved is hands-down one of the best health products for Kinect. The system just launched so that’s only saying so much, but I appreciate how seriously it takes itself. I’ve grown tired of cartoon representations of myself and Your Shape’s future-cool approach, combined with programs and tips from leading health publications, will help you take your workouts more seriously. If you use this regularly, balance your diet and cut back on carbs, you will definitely see results and enjoy yourself while doing it.

Your Shape: Fitness Evolved tracks the calories you shed and other statistics, but you should note that at the time of this review, the website used to track progress and set personal goals is a slow-moving mess. It’s nice that you can go in and create calorie-loss goals, but important features, such as leaderboards and stat comparisons with friends, either don’t work correctly or are listed as “coming soon.

That said, the technology on offer in Your Shape: Fitness Evolved is often outstanding and if you’re self-motivated, you’ll be able to overlook that problem. Besides, summer usually sees us all making crazy resolutions and making use of the technology available could very well help you to reach your goals.

When you begin, Kinect scans your body to measure stuff like chest size, waist and hip line, arm and leg length. It’s all very futuristic and exciting. The main things it can’t determine that you need to input are age, weight and how frequently you work out (if at all).

Your Shape: Fitness Evolved is a forgettable exercise game that can nevertheless get you sweating in your living room, but it has none of the depth and longevity of its competitors. This is one game that will be holding it a bit longer before it gets some real estate on the motion gaming fire hydrant.
