Deck 13, one of Germany’s most successful game developers, has teamed up with dtp entertainment to present Venetica, a visually stunning role-play game with a cryptic storyline. In the era of Venetica, Death walks among the living as a flesh & blood being, carrying out the deeds of an ancient council known by a few as Corpus. Each generation of the Corpus is set with the task of selecting the next predecessor of the bringer of death. Unfortunately, the most recent council had unwittingly selected a crafty necromancer who is determined on bringing death and destruction to the world.

Venetica is really about the relationship between the mortal world and the twilight world, and it’s cleverly incorporated into the gameplay. There are certain enemies you can only kill if you switch to the twilight world, and you’ll need to solve quests by using twilight powers you gain along your journey. For example, in most games, skeletons are scattered about for atmosphere. While the same is true in Venetica, as you progress through the game you can eventually interact with them, which is really cool. The way Venetica handles lock picking is also clever, and although it’s essentially just a memory mini-game, it’s skinned in an interesting manner.

Venetica is a neat idea for an RPG hamstrung by an engine that can’t do the maths quick enough and some terrible production values. There are memorable moments, such as a surprisingly creepy face-off against a stone lion, but for the most part it’s merely mediocre. There’s sedate fun to be had, but only if you’ve picked this up at a bargain-bin price.

Another nail in Venetica’s coffin comes in the form of bugs and design flaws, perhaps arising from its port over from PC. Some can actually be quite amusing — a sword will occasionally be suspended, motionless, in the middle of an empty path, characters will sit on benches and miss, squatting in mid-air instead. Other flaws can be extremely annoying, such as the camera losing sight of you while you’re getting pounded, or the map plotting your next destination incorrectly, forcing you to play lost tourist.

First of all, the game does not autosave. So even if you dig two hours into the game, if you didn’t manually save your game and you die, you’ll have to start over. The game’s manual even says that autosaving occurs at certain points throughout the game, but after hours in the game world I have not once had this happen.
