The story of Valkyria Chronicles II takes place two years after the conclusion of the original game. A group of young Gallian Military Academy cadets find themselves plunged into a bitter civil war when the newly formed Gallian Revolutionary Army stages a coup. The game allows players to experience the stories of friendship, love and growing pains during a time of war and revolution.

destructoid.com review
Valkyria Chronicles II is one of those so-good-you’ll-lose-all-track-of-time games. It’s a big, shiny, AAA-class game in a tiny little package, and despite its small size it still does a fair bit of justice to the franchise name. A new story, battle improvements, new troops, and a ton of missions are exactly what Valkyria Chronicles fans were asking for. And while they may have not asked for it in a portable package, I don’t think they’ll mind too much. The good news is that you won’t feel that there were any compromises made to make this sequel a PSP game. This is the real deal, folks. Don’t miss this game.

Overall, if you enjoyed the original, I see no reason why you wouldn’t want to pick this one up. It doesn’t quite wow you in the visual department like the original one did, and the story / characters seem to take a step back here, but the overall gameplay is certainly intact. It’s still a lot of fun to play, and a unique game in the genre. PSP owners would do well with checking it out, and while this review is a little late in the making, it’s definitely not too late to pick this up if you haven’t already.

The game’s music could use some variety, but it gets the job done. Voice acting is pretty good (doesn’t hurt that Crispin Freeman is involved), but just beware, you’ll have to put up with Avan’s “Ahahaha” laugh quite a bit and it does not take long to get on your nerves.

Valkyria Chronicles 2 has the depth of a console title but squeezed into the tiny confines of a handheld. VC2 will hook you in right away. The combat, customization and audio are top notch yet the story takes a bit of time to get started and early missions are overly easy – but once it gets going, you won’t want to put it down. While the trip from the PS3 to PSP scared many of us at first, Sega actually took what made the first game memorable and added a slew of new features to the game.

Outside of the tactical gameplay, there’s not much that is returning to the game. VC1’s storybook mode is out. In its place is a fortress type structure that players view like a map. The different rooms of the fortress light up when they have missions for the player. This is the area where the player will manage the entire campaign. The R&D room returns, so you can build new weapons and equipment, along with other areas like Drill Grounds and Mess Hall.

Valkyria Chronicles II is the best PSP game I’ve played in years. It could have been even better if not for the limitations of the hardware, but hopefully Sega wises up and puts Valkyria Chronicles III back on home consoles. A game combining the large-scale combat of the original with the depth of the sequel would be a powerhouse of the strategy genre. In the meantime, this entry should delight fans of the original and inspire the uninitiated to pledge their allegiance to Gallia.

The PSP is a great platform for the SRPG genre, with games such as Final Fantasy: War of the Lions and the Disgaea series being shining examples. Valkyria Chronicles II is – dare I say it – the best of the bunch, and a truly fantastic PSP game in its own right. The multiplayer features might be wasted over here in the UK, but the plethora of other improvements and new features are more than enough to compensate. Those who have played the original won’t need me to justify dropping the cash on it, but for those that haven’t and are looking for a stylish, intellectually stimulating strategy game, Valkyria Chronicles II won’t disappoint.

There’s a lot to get to grips with–even before starting to experiment with homemade temporary weapon coatings–and this is not a game for hand-holding. Staying on top of the stats, symbols, tech trees, and nested menus will keep you working hard, and the game especially punishes laziness or recklessness later on, but the experience as a whole is cerebral and rewarding. Except for the puny maps, Valkyria Chronicles II deftly expands on the original; even the relative downgrade in graphics, dictated by the handheld format, doesn’t keep it from being an attractive game.

It’s tough for me to complain too much in the face of what is really a well thought out sequel that takes full advantage of the PSP though. And much as I dislike Avan and company, I actually enjoyed the bits that highlighted the civil war taking place in the background. Time will tell whether Valkyria Chronicles will ultimately break out and become a mainstream favorite; but with two quality games now under its belt, the series certainly deserves any success that comes its way.
