Rewarding, generous and overwhelmingly massive, this is a racing fan’s dream, and proof that the racing-MMO genre has legs. Arcade racing fans may baulk at the disciplined racing mechanic, but purists will find plenty to enjoy.

Test Drive Unlimited 2 might be lacking in some areas, but this is one instance where the sheer quantity of features prevails since their structure is thoughtful enough to make this game more than just a lazy vacation.

The game has a huge map and consists of two islands Ibiza and Oahu, both of which are very beautiful and kept me engaged for a while when I got bored of races. There is a lot to explore and the changing environment in itself is reason enough for wanting to spend a majority of your time in the open-world. The details of both the vehicles and landscapes are phenomenal, although the cut scenes could have been better.

The amount of bounce is astonishing. Hit a wall, car or tree and you’ll immediately spin and flip out of control. We know TDU2 isn’t about realistic collisions, but come on now – there is ‘arcade racing’ and then there is ‘mental flipfest’. Eventually it comes down to learning what not to hit, and leaving the track usually leads to a situation you’d rather not be in.

Another brave and ambitious effort from the consistently inventive Eden Games, then, but another flawed gem. If anything, Test Drive Unlimited 2 teaches us that it’s not just the open world you create, but what you do within it that really forms its identity. A shame then, that despite coming across like the coolest guy at the party, deep down, TDU2 is still not really sure who it is.

The game also gives you a combo system to earn money from early on where by dodging cars, jumping and drifting you’ll earn cash. But if you bump into anything along the way you’ll lose your combo and your money. As you work up through the 10 levels of combos, you can bank funds at any stage for a limited period of time before the meter reaches for its next point. This system is helpful early on as you don’t have as much money, but after winning a few championship races the system’s maximum of $4,000 just doesn’t seem worth the stress of banking up 10 levels of combo.

Another problem that hasn’t been properly addressed from the original is the horrible user interface, which makes almost every task – particularly navigation and the more arcane multiplayer options – far more complicated than they need be.

Test Drive Unlimited 2 still has the magic. It also still has the bugs (we tested the retail Xbox 360 version), unreliable network performance, inconsistent graphics and physics, unwieldy interface and scrappy, lightweight vehicle handling.

Pop-up and pop-in is something that many games suffer from to some degree, with TDU2 this seems more prevalent. This wouldn’t be too bad, but at times the frame rate really lags away and it’s difficult to believe it is reaching 30 fps most of the time – TDU also isn’t that great in the looks department when compared to its peers. It’s not been totally spanked with the ugly stick, but this aspect matters more to some gamers so is worth pointing out.

At the moment – three weeks of regular play and barely scratching the surface – I’m erring on the side of caution with this score. Ask me again when I’ve made it to Hawaii and I suspect it may creep up a little.
