strategyinformer.com review
I’m still playing Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition to this day – and will Street Fighter X Tekken replace that? No, probably not – you can’t beat a bit of one-on-one, slower paced, tense Street Fighter action, but this game is an excellent spin-off – an excellent change of flavour and pace that’s incredibly fun and far easier to pick up.

Even the overly long load times can’t overshadow what is a fantastically substantial fighting game. If Marvel vs Capcom 3 was too wacky for your tastes, this sits comfortably between it and Street Fighter IV on the lunacy spectrum. The tag mechanic is brilliantly robust, there are loads of new moves to master and the Tekken characters slot in more comfortably than a bum in a favourite armchair. Welcome to your new favourite fighting game.

Capcom has managed to create another fantastic Street Fighter title in Street Fighter X Tekken, successfully integrating a stable of Tekken fighters that might not have worked in less experienced hands. Some characters have been tweaked to fit – like Jin Kazama now having a projectile attack for instance – but most remain true to their original Tekken styles. It’s supremely well-balanced, expertly crafted and full to point of bursting with fresh features and moves. Whether you’re a Street Fighter fan or a Tekken fan, you won’t be disappointed.

We already have Third Strike and Street Fighter 4. We don’t need another one. This ripped, boisterous crossover game arrives in a blaze of creativity, one of an intensity rarely seen in Japanese game output of late. A fierce, passionate marriage then – but one that just might last.

The fast pace of the combat and fluidity of the tag mechanics truly bring Street Fighter X Tekken to the top of the fighting game heap. The Gem system is a fine addition that manages to do something daring by offering some new strategy to the fighting, and the two rosters complement each other very well. Street Fighter X Tekken is a fantastic fighting game that nails the basic fighting mechanics while daring to take a few risks with the formula as we know it; the pressure is on Namco Bandai to deliver something better with Tekken X Street Fighter.

It’s hard to tell whether or not Street Fighter X Tekken will blow up like Street Fighter IV did with the competitive community, but given how good it is, I hope it does. Despite the lack of story options, there’s plenty of solid gameplay to be had here, and the online features are going to keep people playing for quite a while. Namco has its work cut out for them with Tekken X Street Fighter.

Street Fighter X Tekken provides complex combat in an inviting package. The fighting genre needs to become accessible to a wider range of players, and this game takes an important step in the right direction. Accessibility that doesn’t come at the expense of variety is a smart move and sets this fun and flashy fighter apart from the pack.

Before the DLC brouhaha popped up, the single most controversial aspect of SFxT was the new gem system, which lets you equip your characters with stat- or ability-boosting gems that activate under certain circumstances. For example, one gem gives you 20 seconds of +20% extra defense (and -10% attack power) after being hit by three special moves; the effect can only fire once per round. While extra gems are available via preorders and in-game purchases – which is where many people start having a problem with it – the default gems don’t seem to have an untowardly large effect on balance. While forthcoming gem releases may change this, as of now gems just add a little more flavor. We doubt Capcom will do much to upset this careful balance.
