Initially conceived as a single game, StarCraft II was split during development into three installments: the base game which acquired the subtitle Wings of Liberty, and two expansion packs, Heart of the Swarm and Legacy of the Void. The Wings of Liberty, will focus on the Terrans.

StarCraft 2 didn’t change the formula because it didn’t need to. This isn’t just a fresh coat of paint on StarCraft, it is StarCraft, right down to its pixelated bones.

This is the perfect sequel. It reaches a hand out to those who didn’t enjoy the first game, while keeping its fiercely loyal fans happy. Its only fault may be that it borrows too heavily from other influences.

Not that I’d know – because I hate PC games remember – but the last 12 years have been well worth the wait and there’s enough content packed into StarCraft II that franchise fans would probably be willing to wait another 12 for the next instalment if they had to.

If judged solely on its failure to resolve its story, Wings of Liberty could have been a disappointment. But with a production so carefully thought out, masterfully designed, and flawlessly executed, it’s impossible to come away from the game with a negative impression.

The single-player is ridiculously fun, the multiplayer is as addictive as hell, and virtually every new mechanic Blizzard has introduced has helped to improve the game.

It might have taken Blizzard over a decade to come out with the sequel to the best selling RTS of all time, but it’s finally here and it’s spectacular. With a 20+ hour epic single player campaign, the new Battle.net 2.0 online match making ladder system and an array of single player challenges, there is truly something here for everyone. Starcraft 2: Wings of Liberty has the makings of a game people will be playing a decade from now. Hopefully it won’t take Blizzard that long to come out with the sequel.

With that said however, StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty is pretty much an absolute must buy for anyone even considering it, with an enormous amount of content available (and this isn’t even delving into community driven custom maps with the highly advanced free editor), an extraordinarily high level of polish and some very genre-bending single player aspects (and believe us, this is no third of a game). Blizzard once again prove their worth in the industry, and like Valve, show that the PC still has plenty of life in it, and a massive and passionate community to fuel it. The king of RTS has returned, and it’s about damn time.

When it comes to delivering a polished, artistically rendered, and enjoyable game, Blizzard is without peer. The company’s philosophy—demonstrated again with StarCraft II—is that innovation and experimentation are less important than taking what’s already successful and bringing it to near perfection. Sure, maybe that’s playing it a little safe, but it’s hard to find fault with a game as well-made as StarCraft II.

Blizzard wasn’t trying to do anything drastically different with StarCraft II. Much of the core gameplay of the original has been preserved, yet with plenty of tweaks, additional units and new abilities for veteran players to toy with and devise new approaches to competitive battles.

You may be asking yourself why we're only now posting our review of StarCraft II. Well, we had two very good reasons to wait: One, a game like StarCraft II requires a lot of time to feel out, especially its multiplayer component; and two, we had the opportunity to have longtime industry vet Jeff Green (whose lengthy resume includes a stint as the editor-in-chief of the influential PC gaming mag Computer Gaming World) write the review for us. We gave Jeff plenty of time to chew on Blizzard's latest effort, and what he found was that while StarCraft II is a terrific game, it's really only ideal for a very specific type of gamer.

I was initially upset that the campaigns would be broken up in three, but I felt I got my $60 worth without question. Though I finished the game in less than a week, it was the first game in long time that I couldn’t get out of my head when I wasn’t playing it, and didn’t move from my chair when I was playing it. Simply fantastic.

Bossman: Let’s not be too cynical, there is potential for the better regarding future expansions, but I was particularly baffled by the ease with which the scriptwriters chose to ignore past events just so they could create “revelations†in this one. I’m not the type of guy to argue with a Star Trek fan whether a faulty Plasma Injector can or can’t send you to an alternate universe (of course it can, doh!), but making Zeratul a senile old man for instance, who doesn’t remember what happened in the secret mission from Brood War is really pushing it, not to mention good ol’ Jim Raynor. Ultimately, the main issue is that these tricks and clichés are too in your face.

An upgraded Battle.net provides the framework for multiplayer in Starcraft 2 with new ranking and matchmaking options along with enough Achievements to stock an almighty trophy cabinet. Its online integration and lack of LAN options are likely to irritate, but that shouldn’t deter from what is a finely tuned and thoroughly enjoyable multiplayer experience. Once again there’s a considerable difference between the three factions, which doesn’t come at the cost of balance. The ability to play 50 ‘friendly’ matches before embarking on your online career is a pleasant touch for newcomers, and certainly likely to help ease the stiff learning curve that comes when playing against Starcraft vets. But even when you’ve faced humiliating defeat after defeat, Starcraft 2 still manages to urge you on and keep you playing.

Once you’ve learned the ropes, StarCraft II’s multiplayer proves to be its defining feature, the area in which its greatest strengths shine through. The balance, and the massive, exciting battles — it’s all here. But more than anything else, the multiplayer battles clearly illustrate the game’s depth of strategy. Playing against human opponents means you will constantly discover new strategies.

Working alongside a terrific soundtrack, some very cool voice acting, and a custom map building tool, the parts of Starcraft II that make it an enjoyable and addictive ride leave little to be desired. If you’re looking to replace the original Starcraft: Brood War or Warcraft III: Frozen Throne with a modern take on Blizzard’s RTS engine, then look no further. The strategic angle will keep most players recycling their ideas to adapt to new challenges, the customization tools will appeal to the artsy types, and the skill required to pull off a solo victory will scare off the campers who are used to sniping people from the corner in their favorite shooter. There’s something for everyone here – fans and veterans need no convincing, and with a generally modest system requirements list, those of you asking yourself why you’ve never heard of Starcraft until now need to stop reading, and go buy the game.

Other than those two complaints, the multiplayer experience is fun. I would warn you that when you get into a match, you had better devote all your concentration to the game or you will be crushed like a bug. The hummingbird on Red Bull rapidity that multiplayer StarCraft games have evolved into over the past decade means you had better build, harvest and expand as a quickly and correctly as possible or you will be quickly defeated, regardless of the race you choose to play. It’s also a good idea to browse the web for some of the many multiplayer guides that have been popping up like weeds if you want to stay competitive (Oh, I definitely concur with that statement – Vader). I am looking forward to seeing how StarCraft 2 multiplayer grows, improves and evolves as time goes on and hope to reproduce some of those white knuckled, hours long play sessions with my buddies from years ago. After enduring the hit and miss parade of RTS titles that have come out over the past 10 years, I am anxious and hopeful that an updated and improved successor is here to assume the crown of the RTS multiplayer royalty. Hail to King baby.

The bottom line is that Starcraft 2 is a very fun, very solid game. It’s nothing truly new or revolutionary, so it isn’t deserving of the highest praise, but it’s well put together, and the underlying game mechanics can still create some fun matches. It’s just a shame that the gameplay is where Blizzard took the fewest risks, as that’s the place where it would have been most significant

StarCraft II is not ground-breaking. It will not have the same lasting impact on gaming that its predecessor did. There’s no way it ever could. It will, however, be remembered as a worthy sequel to one of the all-time greats. It’s just a shame that (at least for now) it’s missed the mark so badly on its narrative. R

It’s certainly not a game you’re going to be playing on a LAN with your friends. Blizzard has abandoned the LAN culture they once helped cultivate. In a month, in six months, or next year, will you find a suitable online game if you don’t keep up with the latest build orders, macro strategies, and micromanagement muscle memory? Or, like every other RTS, will this turn into another Halo, populated by a viciously optimized player base? We’ll see. But it’s a grim irony that our best hope for a thriving community of casual RTS players lies in an RTS this traditional and demanding.
