Kinect Sports may have a simple premise, but that very simplicity is what allows it to shine. As much a tech demo of the Kinect’s abilities as a game, it is somewhat surprising that Kinect Sports wasn’t chosen as the featured pack-in title. If you own a Kinect, this is a game that really should be in your collection.

You can use your Avatar however you please, and the default characters aren’t bad either. Each activity resembles the real thing, including the fully packed soccer field, the cool indoor boxing arena, and, of course, the Cosmic Bowling lane, our favorite. The music snippets are well chosen (save for Lady Gaga – really?) and the sound effects are right on the money, particularly with crowd noises. It’s great hearing these guys get behind you. It may not be as legendary as Wii Sports (yet), but for a debut sports compilation for Microsoft’s high-priced gadget, Kinect Sports does more than enough to push the thrill of competition. It’s good fun with friends, and the easily adaptable controls make it very user friendly, no matter what your height and age is. Anyone can be a winner when it comes to these Sports.

Kinect Sports is a brilliant example of how good a mini-game compilation can be and proves to be an excellent demonstration of how well Kinect can work. It does lack a little depth in some areas but proves to be an excellent title to play with friends.

Sports are an inherently active activity and as such do a great job in showcasing motion controls and so it was no surprise when Microsoft announced that Kinect Sports would be a launch title for their new hardware. It was something of a surprise that the game was not to .

These challenges are fun for a while, but also work against the title too, in that once we’d completed those available, it dawns on us that there really isn’t that much content in Kinect Sports. Once you’ve played each sport for an hour or two, there aren’t any extra modes to play or medals to win – your only option then is to play with friends, or continue playing single matches against computer players. This is a game that needs some sort of story mode where all six sports are putting together in increasingly difficult scenarios, but alas, no such mode exists.

There’s something charming about Kinect Sports in that it’s engaging, entertaining and most importantly fun to play, both alone or with other players. Younger players will be able to get into events very easily, as everything is explained very concisely, and most people are familiar with the actual sports anyway. There could have been a lot more events though, as six does feel a bit bare bones, especially with the simplicity of some of them. That said, as a first foray into Kinect gaming, you can’t really go wrong with what’s on offer here because each event plays very well (bar the discus) and really gets you involved in the activity. There is room for improvement, such as better graphics and more variation, but as it stands, the levels of entertainment you gain means you won’t or shouldn’t feel short changed. if you’re going to get your friends and family involved with Kinect, then you’d do well to slap this game in first to get everyone familiar with what your new controller can do. It’s cool, fun and full of sporting attitude which is incredibly hard not to fall in love with.

As an example of what Kinect can do, and as a point of entry for gamers and casuals alike, Kinect Sports delivers an easily accessible but surprisingly nuanced game. While there are some stumbling points here and there, such as the strange local multiplayer omissions in Table tennis or the muddled co-op mechanics of soccer, Kinect Sports still manages to be fun and different. If you’re looking for a game that shows off the hardware, this is it.

Admittedly, I could have done without the not very good commentary. I also disliked the high number of menus between the title screen and actual gameplay, though the ability to quickly jump right back into an event after you’ve played it helps.

There isn’t much of a career for single-player fans outside of a basic leveling system. You’ll get experience every time you play under your profile and earn a new badge and avatar awards every ten levels. That’s about all there is to it.

especially if you’ve got some friends or family that can experience the fun with you. It easily could have become a weak game that nobody cared about, but Rare gave it a special touch that elevated this game to the level of other great motion-sports games.

Kinect Sports is a robust package that offers a lot of variety on one disc. Some of the sports lack some basics when compared with their real life counter parts but none of this detracts from the fun. Those looking for a showcase of Kinect’s potential have to look no further than Rare’s first offering. There are few factors that may deter some from taking the full priced plunge – in game advertisements and an over abundance of menus being two of the major issues presents.

Microsoft said that it intends to treat Kinect like a console launch and looking over the launch titles it appears they’ve been true to their word. Of course, launch titles tend to rely just as much on the new hardware as the hardware does on the games. Kinect Sports works well enough as a launch title and has more than enough heft to ensure that it’s not labeled as just a tech demo. Yes, there are some kinks that need to be addressed, particularly with the hardware, but if you’re looking to pad out the library for your shiny new peripheral, Kinect Sports should be a definite consideration.

Meanwhile, the soccer, beach volleyball, table tennis, and five track-and-field events prove just as enjoyable — sometimes surprisingly so. We didn’t expect much from stationary soccer, but passing and shooting are fun and goal-keeping is a hoot. Beach volleyball, too, is invitingly kinetic, and the arcadey mini-games will keep you on your toes. We also love the added touch of the sport-appropriate outfits your Avatar dons while in the game.

The colorful stadiums filled with avatars and the neon-soaked bowling alley where strikes are celebrated with laser light shows and short samples from licensed songs look great, but they never change. And that’s the biggest problem with Kinect Sports: You need friends or family around to keep it interesting. If you don’t have anyone to play with, you’re probably not going to play it at all after checking out all of the events a couple of times. Convince your family to play on a holiday or get together with friends both online and locally, though, and good times are guaranteed.

And that’s really about it. Like Wii Sports, you will probably have a lot of fun while the Kinect technology is still new and exciting, but after that wears off, you’ll only bring this one out for parties or over-energetic kids. That’s not to say you should ignore this title, not by any means, but don’t go expecting an in-depth game that will keep you occupied for a long time. Kinect Sports may just be the best of the first-party motion sports games, but it still feels like it should have been released four years ago. Whether that matters or not — and whether you yourself have had your fill of mini-game collections — is entirely up to you.

As party games go, Kinect Sports is infectiously good fun. It’s highly doubtful that this title will be enough to woo Wii owners over to the Xbox 360 on its own. But for players who already own Microsoft’s console and a Kinect sensor, it’s more than worth a look. Just remember to take note of your surroundings before playing a round of volleyball …

The football is shoddy, avatars glitch out and every now and again and the responsiveness of the game is occasionally brought into question – but none of this stops the experience being enjoyable. To conclude then, the answer to a question that has been on everybody’s lips: is Kinect Sports better than Wii Sports.

It’s tough to recommend Kinect Sports to anyone who owns either of the Wii Sports entries or PlayStation Move Sports because they’re pretty similar. And with few exceptions, Rare’s completely controller-less take doesn’t bring much to the arm-flailing Olympics. That said, highlights such as beaning a goal-aimed soccer ball and setting ping pong projectiles ablaze certainly make you feel Kinect-ed. If you’re not too keen on soccer or table tennis, then feel free to knock a few points off this score, since those are the main reasons to play the game. Finally, if you’re completely new to the motion-controlled sports world this could provide some decent, active entertainment.

Kinect Sports is a rough launch title that’s all about the novelty of Kinect. And judging by the endless stream of photos and videos circulating online over the past week, the secret selling point of the game may actually be the ability to share stupid photos and videos of you and your stupid loved ones looking stupid doing really stupid things with your stupid limbs.
