Sonic Colors has a few other problems. Towards the end of the game, checkpoints are absent from a number of especially difficult levels leading to scenarios where I threw life after life into the same two and a half minutes over and over again. Also, Sonic Colors’ purported co-op is just not fun. One screen is not enough for two Sonics, as either player rocketing forward will actually kill their partner. Thankfully, the co-op challenge levels can be played single player, and because they’re unlocked based on how many red rings you collect, they give a reason to go back to Sonic Colors’ story mode and experiment with different Wisps. This is a good thing, as Sonic Colors’ stages are actually more fun the second time through with the full range of Wisps in each level unlocked.

Though clearly designed with kids in mind, Sonic Colours offers the most enjoyable “modern” Sonic experience to date and is easily the best Sonic game to come out in years

You might finish all the levels (there are seven for each of the six main zones) in about 10 hours, but you’re encouraged to improve your score and rank in each by collecting more rings, stars, and wisps, as well as improving your time and seeking out the alternative routes through the mostly linear levels. Even without the incentive of an improved score on the online leaderboards, though, it’s worth revisiting zones in Sonic Colours just to admire the dazzling scenery at top speed. This is a Sonic game with verve and imagination, and Wii owners shouldn’t miss an opportunity to play with Sonic at his best.

Your activities generally fall into two categories – platforming and speed-runs – and there’s a good mix of the two. Certain levels are gigantic, ceaseless runs which leave you panting and starry-eyed, while others mix side-scrolling platform-work into the fray. The variety of locations and environments all bring their own flavours of challenge, and only rarely do you find yourself hammering repeatedly against a problem.

It’s hard, though, to dwell on the things Sonic Colors gets wrong when it does so much right. To say that this game comes as a surprise would be an enormous understatement. Sonic fans, I know it’s hard to believe, but there’s a reason to believe again. Now, I’m going to stop praising the game so you can go and play it — and so I don’t risk jinxing the possibility of a sequel. Or, dare I dream, an HD version for PS3 and 360.

Sonic Colours is a great return to form for Ol’ Blue. Without the distractions of combat, hub worlds and pointless Wii-mote waggling, Sonic Team has been able to put all its efforts into creating a platformer Sonic fans can be proud of. The quality of the level design is what separates this from previous disappointments, and it’s certainly better than that on show in Sonic 4. Despite a few niggling flaws, the only real complaint I have is not being able to play the game in high definition. Something to work on next, SEGA?

Sonic Team’s most recent Wii offering is evidence that it’s attempting to claw its way out of a deep grave crammed with disappointing titles. Some diehard Sonic fans with unlimited patience may find enjoyment here, but the rest of us should pick up one of Sonic’s fully 2D titles until they get it right.

Sonic Colours never feels like a world you want to hang out in. There are smart ideas and neat challenges here, but in the end there’s probably too much stuff and the untidy interface makes it hard to get at the goodies. Despite the sturdy gameplay, the lack of polish makes you wonder if Sonic Team is just like Sonic himself: doing this because this is what they do, rather than because there’s any real reason to.
