I went into Sniper Elite V2 with one desire: Disfigure Nazis from hundreds of meters away. The game delivers on this core mechanic beautifully. While I would have preferred enemies with less superhuman vision and better stealth options, at the end of the game I couldn’t recall a scenario I didn’t enjoy. Sniper Elite V2 is a must for anyone interested in a smart shooter with an emphasis on gore.

Sniper Elite V2 is a prime example of how a streamlined take on a singular gaming concept can result in something great, even if it’s got a bit of clunk to it. The delivery of competent and enthralling gameplay was effective enough that the weaknesses we found were hardly roadblocks to enjoyment. It’s a gory title that’ll surprise you if you give it a shot. We still haven’t seen all the ways a bullet can kill a man yet, and we might just keep on playing until we do.

Glitches keep Sniper Elite V2 from a higher score, though, especially in the game’s innovative co-op modes, where bugs kept us from completing some objectives. Hopefully, an update will fix this otherwise excellent experience.

Rebellion’s remake might not be as dramatic as Tomb Raider’s Anniversary edition by Crystal Dynamics, though it’s still an atmospheric sniper sim with arcade leanings. Coupled with a solid co-op mode, the game tacks on several more hours to its relatively short eight-hour campaign. The thin story and dodgy AI are balanced against great set pieces and a decent ending that almost begs for a sequel. As a WWII shooter, Sniper Elite V2 won’t turn you into a one-man Rambo toting MG42s and BARs across Europe. Would-be WWII heroes will get the most out of it by paying heed to the old adage of, "Good things come to those who wait." Your patience will reverberate in every shot.

Sniper Elite V2 is a bit of a surprise if truth be told, as while it’s blatantly a one trick pony the atmosphere and tension never seem to drop and the satisfaction with each and every kill is just second to none. It’s such a shame that once you engage in combat without the scope things get so disappointing, not to mention the frankly awful stealth mechanics and almost supernatural enemy AI on the higher difficulties. On the whole though Sniper Elite V2 makes taking on the Nazi war machine a supremely satisfying experience assuming you tackle it as it was meant to be played. You against the elements, one bullet at a time.

Sniper Elite V2 is a solid game that is surprisingly more fun to play than it should be. There really isn’t much like it, and Rebellion has done an amazing job of piecing it all together. The X-ray kills are deeply satisfying, and co-op mode will have you playing for hours on end. Still, it is not for everyone. There are plenty of quirks and odd design decisions that may hamper some people’s enjoyment, but if you can find a buddy to tackle the co-op, the game is definitely worth playing through. I might suggest waiting for a small price drop, but I definitely recommend checking out Sniper Elite V2. It is much more fun than you think it will be.

It’s a decent selection for a decent game. While Sniper Elite V2 is too patchy to recommend wholeheartedly, its brief flirtations with excellence and its core sniping make for an enjoyable, bloody waltz through Berlin. It won’t replace Call of Duty or Battlefield, but its slower, sneakier twist on the military shooter is a welcome concept, even if it doesn’t always hit the mark.

A flawed action game, then, that misses its intended targets almost as often as it hits them. But also a game that, perhaps unexpectedly, provides a moment’s pause for reflection every time a bullet meets its prey. For that feature alone, it’s somewhat unique.

Sniper Elite V2 is an unremarkable shooter by modern standards, but the satisfaction of its cinematic kills is hard to deny. It’s just a shame that these moments are encased in a generally shoddy gameplay experience.

So while Rebellion successfully executes its one, gruesome technical trick throughout the course of Sniper Elite V2, it fails to capitalise on its best game loop: that of you and a rival sniper exchanging shots across vast chunks of beautifully rendered locales in a crumbling Berlin. A player vs player multiplayer option would have been the obvious opportunity to emphasise and focus on this strength (tailored co-op modes are offered instead), and its omission stands out even more when there’s so little in the way of replay value to the campaign. Occasionally gripping but frequently unfulfilling, Sniper Elite V2 comes in at a heavy price for a package that’s all gore and little reward
