digitalchumps.com review
Multiplayer modes are all two player co-op based, including splitscreen support. You can replay through the campaign, except for the opening Prologue mission, and three other modes with three maps each are also entertaining. DLC with more maps is surely on the way, but what’s included here is quite good. Kill Tally mode is your classic firefight or horde mode where enemies come in waves and it’s up to your and your buddy to take’em down. Bombing Run has one player running to try and repair a vehicle while the other provides sniping support. Overwatch has one player at ground level, tagging enemies with his binoculars for his sniper pal to nail. All three modes are creative and a lot of fun, adding many hours of time to SEV2.

There are a few points where gameplay gets a little slow, but good audio and graphics quality create an immersive experience and the X-Ray Killcam is extremely rewarding. Though Sniper Elite V2 sometimes lacks in polish, it provides a great outlet to play out your dreams of being a one man army while enjoying the carnage that results from each shot.

I went into Sniper Elite V2 with one desire: Disfigure Nazis from hundreds of meters away. The game delivers on this core mechanic beautifully. While I would have preferred enemies with less superhuman vision and better stealth options, at the end of the game I couldn’t recall a scenario I didn’t enjoy. Sniper Elite V2 is a must for anyone interested in a smart shooter with an emphasis on gore.

The one thing you can be certain of when playing Sniper Elite V2 is that you will die if you don’t use stealth. The game therefore encourages sneaking around with features such as sound masking, where you might hear a voice bellowing through a loud speaker while infiltrating an enemy camp. This gives you a few seconds of opportunity to let a shot off without being heard.

Sniper Elite V2 is by no means the perfect game, but it’s definitely one of the better sniper-genre games to come along in a while, and a nice change of pace for the TIRED World War 2 shooter genre, which has been run into the ground and down to the core of the earth in the last decade. If patient gameplay broken up by incredibly frustrating moments is your thing, look no further. There certainly isn’t a better game to play if you want to see x-ray views of eyeballs getting blown to bits or testicles exploded, that’s for sure!

It might be like playing a cheesy film you’d find on Movies4Men before 10pm, but Sniper Elite V2 is an atmospheric and compulsive experience. It’s only taken three versions of the same game for you to notice it exists, and if you can ignore the clunky controls and concentrate on aiming that gun, there’s much to enjoy.

The games weakest moments are when it tries to make you do anything other than snipe. There are times when it tries to make you play a cover-based shooter, but the game’s cover system is glitchy and it’s hard to tell which walls are safe and which ones aren’t. There are portions that emphasize the stealth aspects of sniping, allowing you to cause distractions in order to sneak past guards behind enemy lines, but these are generally soured by the hyper-alert A.I. soldiers.

The Bombing Run mode is the best though, where you have to collect parts of a tank in order to repair your own vehicle. But even this is ruined by the magically spawning enemies, who really do cheapen the whole game. The thrill of formulating a plan of attack and then seeing if you can execute it is constantly prone to uninteresting and frustrating interruptions, and turns many promising gameplay experiences into chores.

Sniper Elite holds just as many pleasant surprises as it does disappointments. Despite the well-done gunplay and unique aesthetic flares, there are simply too many areas in which the game feels underdeveloped. Without a sound stealth mechanic in place, you never feel as empowered as you ought to, the absence of a HUD or any sort of tactical overlay coating on an additional layer of fragility.
