The developers of Sniper Elite 3 at Rebellion have put together a new trailer of the game, showcasing its multiplayer aspects. The trailer contains plenty of skull-busting headshots, stealth, and straight up running and gunning. It looks every bit as visceral as previous trailers of the game.

Sniper Elite 3 treads that fine line between realism and fun, but it comes together well, providing cheap kicks for those who enjoy over-the-top sniper kills, and a modicum of tactical depth for players looking for something more substantial.

So, that’s Sniper Elite 3, and as mentioned above you probably knew a fair few paragraphs back whether this was for you or not. In a lot of ways, it’s basically what I’ve always wanted from a sniping game – it’s got solid sniping that relies on skill but isn’t overcomplicated, solid stealth that requires thought but isn’t in a pure stealth game, and big broad levels with optional objectives that let you approach things in all sorts of different ways.

The other main issue is with enemy intelligence. The AI is often slow to catch on when it notices you, guards often staring for what seems like minutes before they work out you’re about to pop their lungs like two party balloons. It can be smart – the moments after a clumsy assassination attempt where scores of enemy soldiers converge on your position can be wonderfully tense – but it can also be capable of quite stupendous stupidity. One amusing moment involved a carefree Italian soldier absent-mindedly strolling past a pair of bloodied legs sticking up prominently over a sandbag. It’s certainly an improvement on previous games, no longer will hordes of enemies charge gleefully into your rifle fire, but there’s still work to be done. The game also has some slightly wonky physics, with enemy corpses flopping about weirdly or soldiers flying off at strange angles when you pop them in the head.

Some of Sniper Elite 3’s failures are funny—a bugged-out Nazi flailing around the map, another gone catatonic—and some of them are frustrating, but its ideas are good and I hope they don’t end here. If Rebellion can get its business model in check (and maybe earn some goodwill by not acting like an ass, a few big patches and a map editor could really bring that 2003 spirit back to life. Realistically, I expect we’ll have to wait for Sniper Elite 4 for significant improvement.

I openly admit that I love gory kills and living the hero sniper fantasy, but Sniper Elite III only partially delivers on the latter. If you can’t get enough of dramatic, transparent shots of enemies getting shredded by sniper fire, Sniper Elite III has you covered in spades. If you’re interested in more motivation beyond the glory of the kill, look elsewhere.

Sniper Elite 3 is an idiot savant of a game, excelling in one specific area while being almost obtuse in many others. I’ve praised it a lot, because I love playing it despite its shittiness, but Rebellion needs to know they can’t ride this one gimmick forever. If it wasn’t for that one brilliant thing it does — Slow-Mo X-Ray Bullet-Cam — it’d be the sort of game only your dad might pick up in a bargain bin sale, years after it released. Instead it’s the KFC’s popcorn chicken of videogames, literal trash you cannot stop cramming in your face.
