Singularity is a solid 10-12 hour game loaded with challenges and plenty of scares early on. The first couple of hours rival F.E.A.R. when it comes to setting up a mood and overall tension. Most of the fear is generated through the incredible sound presentation with all sorts of subtle nuances playing in all the surround channels. The voice acting is surprisingly good and effective. I enjoyed the tape recordings but wished their playback volume wasn’t based on my proximity to the deck. I like to click those and keep moving while listening.

Singularity is a game that manages to feel like its own thing despite being pieced together from previous FPS games, and if you want a great Summer shooter full of violent toys and silly super powers, then you won’t get much better than this. Quite possibly the best new FPS of the year so far.

As a new IP, Singularity is not groundbreaking, its environmental design is largely linear, and its heavily borrowed gameplay features hide otherwise generic run-and-gun action. But, on the other hand, the game offers superb presentation, a clever and intriguing storyline, a wealth of fearsome weapons, and, in the Time Manipulation Device, a gameplay tool that channels borrowed features so seamlessly that any sense of blatant thievery is quickly forgiven.

Singularity is a solid FPS with a working gimmick and a solid narrative. Fans of games like BioShock and Metro 2033 owe it to themselves to give it a run through. I strongly suggest picking up the game for the single player and not banking on the online as I imagine it will quickly become a ghost town with its lack of modes and meager community. Still the strong campaign is enough reason to play through the game and I actually want to eventually play through again just to experience the world once it isn’t fresh in my mind anymore. Raven Software has proven that they can do more than create established franchises and I hope everyone gives this game the chance it deserves.

Audio is similarly impressive. Guns and time effects sound powerful and punchy, even if the voice acting is average. A good orchestral score accentuates the given mood of any section or level. As a side note, I’m going to stop mentioning when Nolan North does a voice for a game, as he seems to not be in fewer games than he is in.

The first person shooter landscape is crowded with titles and another huge title is going to join the mix in a couple of months with Halo Reach. You need to be able to stand out in the crowd and replayability is one way that you do that. With that said I would definitely recommend to everyone that they should give this title a try. You might be pleasantly surprised. The time travel stuff they did was fantastic and was definitely a nice change of pace from what you experience from other titles in this genre.

They say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, and if that old adage rings true, then you can pick out with relative ease the various inspirations that have influenced the development team as they built Singularity. It would be fair to say that just about every FPS has been influenced to some degree by the industry and its success stories, and not unlike the God of War series being referenced through a whole wave of recent hack and slash games, Singularity sidles up to BioShock and carefully notes down all the good stuff.

I wanted to also add that I liked what Raven did in terms of keeping the player going in the right direction. Generally the objective and proper path is easy to find, but if you ever feel lost, just press down on the d-pad to do a Chrono Ping. When you do, brightly lit footsteps show you the path you need to take. I liked this better than a persistent compass or pointer on screen and figured it was worth mentioning.

In spite of Singularity’s nod to information-gathering, with its notes, film reels, and audio recordings, there simply isn’t enough meat to the story to dole it out evenly over the course of a dozen hours, and the final third of the game feels malnourished, introducing few new abilities or plot developments.

Singularity has a kind of Bioshock feel to it with its own unique take involving time manipulation. This first-person shooter brings you back and forth times like the cold war era and 2010.
