The game does take inspiration from the original Playstation game in terms of the twisting plot, but takes a different path in many, many ways. Characters can be approached but will offer different responses and be found in different places, while new clues and gameplay paths can be followed. The title follows Harry Mason, as he attempts to unravel the mystery of his missing daughter, Cheryl. A broken man, Mason’s investigations lead him to the mist-shrouded, snowy streets of Silent Hill: a malevolent town where the shadows play host to a wealth of evil, misshapen creatures.

Boy, was I ever wrong. Instead of some Silent Hill one-off rehash, we get a lovingly crafted story set in a world so deep and involving that it actually does the series name proud. The Wii waggle? More like Wii mastery. The control is a new hallmark for Wii games, let alone Silent Hill titles. And the no weapons part? Absolutely brilliant, and it works out to be a chillingly beautiful thing when you finally understand what the story is about.

Whether or not this is true, or if Konami intends to flounder on soullessly without Yamaoka remains to be seen, but if this is to be the series’ swan song, it’s a great note to go out on. And to all my fellow Silent Hill fans, I say this: at least we’ve already learned to let go.

If you like survival horror games and you have a Wii, buy this immediately. Buy a second copy in case the first one wears out. If you don’t have a Wii, hire one to play this. It’s that good. Just don’t play it alone – it’s that good.

If you ever want to create a horror game for a console gaming machine, than Silent Hill Shattered Memories should be used as your template. Not only it is an extremely well written game but the gameplay is quite sturdy on the Wii and is easily one of the better titles available at present. Although not steeped in action as some games, the atmosphere will keep you on the edge of your seat as you attempt to piece together this mystery and ultimately discover whether you’re sane or insane. Even though most gamers will finish this title in around 8 hours, you can easily play it again for some different interactions with the strange assemble of Silent Hill. If you do decide to buy this game, do yourself a favour and play it in the dark… and make sure you don’t have any heart condition

As with the seminal original, the game focuses on Harry Mason’s desperate search for his young daughter, Cheryl. Having crashed his car one night on an icy road on the outskirts of Silent Hill, he wakes up in a blind panic to discover her missing. Grabbing a torch, he ventures out into the snowy night, scaling fences, checking nearby buildings for clues to her whereabouts and hollering her name at the top of his lungs.

Whether you buy into the psychology bits or not, Silent Hill: Shattered Memories is still a great horror game on a console starved for them, yet is more remarkable for being a distinctly Wii game through-and-through. Play it for the atmosphere, play it for the suspense, play it for the story; we don’t care, just don’t miss out on one of the best Wii games this year.

It flies in the face of the typical Wii game, yet uses the console’s unique strengths and comes out a better game for it. If you’re one of those people who is sick of all those party games on Nintendo’s lovable, family-friendly console, and are crying out for a proper, grown up videogame, look no further than this. Silent Hill. Saved. On the Wii. By a developer other than Team Silent.

Silent Hill: Shattered Memories is without a doubt one of the year’s finest games, and is another example of a well made third-party game for the Wii. After witnessing what the developers were able to accomplish emotionally and psychologically, I’m convinced that there’s a whole new level of gameplay we gamers have yet to experience. Shattered Memories strips survival horror down to the bare essentials, and comes out as one of the strongest games in the genre’s history. It may not have much in common with its predecessors, but this is one Silent Hill story that everyone should witness.

The Silent Hill series has always been about the parallel existence of two dimensions: the real and the nightmare. While scares are plentiful in the real world, the true horrors begin in the bloody, hellish realm.
