gameshark.com review
There’s a certain satisfactory feeling that goes along with playing a game before anyone else as you revel in a secret world shared by a few people. The same is true here, but I have not played a game that I wanted others to play as much since the release of Saints Row 2. This is a game best experienced through the stories of other players as their exploits and crazy stunts act as the starting point to your own set of incredible feats. Volition has done an excellent job of giving you a place to play and toys to play with, so grab a partner, an SMG, and start making your own stories. Steelport is waiting.

Saints Row has always been seen as something of an also-ran, but The Third finally says, in no uncertain terms, that it’s just as big and even more fun than its more serious competition. Some might be tempted to dismiss the game because of its extreme wackiness, but know that at its core, the game is incredibly well crafted and ceaselessly fun. While the comedies typically lose out to the dramas come awards time, none of it changes the fact that Saints Row: The Third is one of the best games of the year, and given this year’s competition, that’s no small compliment.

Saints Row the Third is an experience unlike any other. It never takes itself too seriously, it remembers that games should be fun and they should entertain. It’s not that any particular part stands out above the other, rather, on the whole, everything is just downright awesome. The character creator alone warrants multiple playthroughs and the story is literally only half the game. While Saints Row the Third has a handful of issues, aesthetically and technical, the positives far outweigh any of the negatives.

In addition to the story missions there are side missions tied to a particular type of activity. Mayhem missions challenge you to use a tank to cause a set amount of property damage, insurance fraud has you acting as a human ragdoll in busy intersections, and Professor Genki, well, think Japanese-style game show meets funhouse of horrors as you must fight your way through warehouses filled with deadly traps and costumed characters trying to kill you. Like every other aspect of the game touched on in this review, there are simply too many different kinds of side missions to list here, and part of the fun in the game is seeing what it throws at you next. Completing a side mission brings you rewards in the form of respect, cash, and an increase in your control of the local neighborhood. In addition to the fact that they’re all pretty much flat-out fun, I like that the game helps you locate the available side missions and rates them as easy, medium, or hard so that you know what you’re getting into.

Elsewhere, The Third builds upon the economy and upgrade system introduced in Saints Row 2 and makes it a core component of the experience. Completing missions and Activities (more on those shortly) earns you cash and Respect. Use cash, in turn, to buy weapons, gear, and myriad abilities, such as extra health, sidekicks to aid you in battle, unlimited sprint, and dozens more. In fact, you’ve got so much to choose from — and many of the best abilities don’t unlock until you advance your Respect level into the 20s and 30s — that no two Saints heroes are likely to be the same. Buying property, meanwhile, increases your control over each neighborhood while also returning a certain hourly cash flow, helping to keep the money coming in to fund your next car customization or ability upgrade.

Saints Row: The Third is the ultimate sandbox, and Volition has given gamers a massive playground and the biggest and best set of toys possible to carve their own unique destiny in Steelport, both in the engaging single player story and the limitless fun waiting to be shared in the co-op game. Strap-in and strap-on for the ride of your life when you rejoin the gang from Stilwater and take on the Syndicate. Steelport is ripe for the taking, and it’s up to you to make the city your own.

The gameplay does borrow quite a bit from Grand Theft Auto’s sandbox-style free-roaming, as you’ll drive throughout the city to complete whatever missions open up. However, there’s a staggering amount of variety to these missions. From roaming undercover in a STAG facility to kidnap a movie star to destroying cars with a rocket launcher from a helicopter to hanging off the side of a building (in your lingerie, no less) using a sniper rifle, there’s no shortage of activities to tackle. The gameplay in each of these segments is terrific, as you’ll never run into a situation where the aiming is off or the controls are weird. There are times mid-air vehicles can get tangled up, but that’s your own damn fault for hitting a building or, like I did, switching flight modes on a VTOL without being clear of a skyscraper. It was funny as hell to watch anyway. Along with the single player campaign, which will take you several hours and features some of the funniest endings you’ll run across in a video game this year, Saints Row the Third also supports co-op, so you can work with a friend online (or system link) to complete missions. It’s cool to have a buddy along for the ride, especially in tougher missions like warehouse raids or, God help you, trying to maintain control of a tiger in a moving vehicle. (He gets angry when you crash – ouch.) Unfortunately, Volition decided to scrap competitive multiplayer for the game, but there’s so much happening, you may not even notice.

Saints Row The Third is an incredibly fun experience that fans of the series will have a blast with. The new diversions and ridiculousness like Professor Genki’s stuff just appeals to the crowd. Never once will you take this game seriously, and you shouldn’t, but when it grabs you it never lets go until you are simply done having fun. I was never frustrated at the game. If I failed a mission I simply went back in and did something more bizarre, which is the beauty of Saints Row. As long as you know that going in, you will have a blast. I can’t recommend this game enough, though. It simply defines what it means to have fun playing games.

Do I think Saints Row: The Third is worth picking up? Absolutely. I’ll assume that you already know whether or not you like open world, sandbox style games. If you do, you’ll find that SR3 contains a lot off the wall violence that’ll satiate your need for random video game fun for a number of hours. It’s bookended by great opening and closing moments, and topped off by a competent co-op mode. You’ll devote more time to the game than just the story fueled segments, and SR3 will certainly keep you interested past the end credits scroll.

Even with a style that can be a bit overbearing after a while, I had a ton of fun playing through Saints Row: The Third on both 360 and PC. There were some issues to be found here and there, but most of these unscripted bits of broken action make the game better and funnier – even if they are bugs – and make the whole thing an intensely amusing, high-octane action game that makes it seem like the whole engine’s barely holding up, but it’s generally doing just fine. I have no idea where the Saints go from here, but then again, I didn’t after SR2 either, and it turned out that they had an even wilder and more entertaining adventure this time. If you get this game, make sure to play it with a friend, because that’s the best way to play.

Almost everything is accessed through the incredibly useful phone menu. Made to look like an iPhone or an Android device, the phone displays a street map that shows all of the activity locations you’ve discovered. You can also call your friends on the phone to access story missions or have them fight with you. The Saints Book application is where all the random challenges are located, and it’s very possible to lose a boatload of time tracking down vehicle requests from chop shops and assassination targets. Having all of these activities governed by the excellently designed fake interface of the phone made performing these tasks a lot more fun because it was so simple to pick a new thing to do right after completing something. Some of the activities do start to feel a little repetitive, but there’s so many different things to do that I could just move onto something else. Like beating up every mascot I could see.

Regardless of a few omitted favorites, Saints Row: The Third features no shortage of activities, side-quests, collectibles, and humorous distractions. Between them, the wealth of new upgrade options, co-op play, Whored mode (a Horde mode clone), and the explosive story missions, there’s no shortage of content. It’s also good to see Volition continue to make the series less buggy with each installment. Occasional glitches will rear their head as you cruise around the new city, but they’re rarely more than cosmetic. Taking over Steelport as the 3rd Street Saints feels like a more focused effort than its predecessors’ campaigns, and it’ll keep you laughing throughout.

On the surface Saints Row: The Third may seem just like a violent, over the top video game without any substance, but that is far from the truth. I quickly found the game is not only extremely violent and insanely fun, but it also carries an interesting and fairly compelling story. The magnitude of customization is stuff of legend, and the lack of a true multi-player mode doesn’t hurt the game in the least as the cooperative mode makes up for this in spades. Simply put, this one wild ride no gamer should miss.

With 8 islands, an airstrip, a military armory, hookers, hundreds of missions, distractions at every corner, and writing that hits damned near every time, Saints Row The Third delivers on almost every promise. The game makes you feel like a badass from the word go, and it just gets even more out of control as things progress. Sure, there are some hiccups graphically, and sometimes things can be a little clunky mechanically, but there is no doubt that Saints Row The Third is crazy fun from start to finish. Professor Genki approves – most honorable, win GET!
