Video games — not just rhythm games, but all video games — rarely show this much ambition. Even more rare are occasions where developers manage to fulfill the impossibly lofty goals they set before themselves. Rock Band 3 manages both with ease, backing up brilliant ideas with flawless execution. It raises the bar so exceptionally high that, once again, it’s just about impossible to see where the rhythm genre is going to go from here.

Harmonix now takes its rightful place alongside all who have championed the gift of music, not to mention those who have, just as importantly, kept it in step with technology. Chief among them is the studio’s owner, MTV, whose patience in that role is too easily overlooked. Amid dreadful misadventures into non-music dross and increasingly antiseptic playlists, Rock Band 3 is by far the most profound development in that company’s recent history.

So that it for what it’s worth, this is not just another 60 DLC disc like other game offers, this has tons of new additions even if you don’t plan on buying more plastic instruments in the meantime. Rock Band 3 continues to delight my gaming senses and eardrums, and I look forward in watching my wallet deplete of funds with new DLC songs and instrument options on down the line.

Rock Band 3 is a complete package and quite possibly the definitive music game. Once again, Harmonix defines and sets the bar for what the music genre can achieve. It will be hard pressed for anyone, Harmonix included, to top this game. But until then, it’s an incredibly fun, rocking good time

Even taking Pro mode out of the equation, Rock Band 3 is still an incredible package of almost limitless depth. From playing online one night to jamming with a room full of friends another, from mastering that tricky guitar solo to taking your first Pro keyboard lessons, from naming your band ‘Aids LOL’ to realising that wasn’t the wisest idea; there is so much to do here that I could conceivably still write that fabled Rock Band 3 diary and end up doing something new and different with the game every single day. It wouldn’t exactly be a riveting read, but it would be the most fun I’ll have had with gaming in ages. Still nobody does this better than Harmonix, and with Rock Band 3 they are at the top of their game.

RB2 was a terrific game, and I still enjoy playing it every now and then, but I can’t see myself going back to non-Pro instruments. Sure, I’d be happy if RB3 added support for a real bass, or was able to play all my music from Beatles Rock Band with Pro settings. But as far as peripheral-based music games go, I can’t think of another rhythm game that covers so many genres and instruments, and does it all so excellently. I’m a failed musician, but RB3 makes me feel like, with a little practice, I might be able to join a band someday that goes on tour further than the edge of my living room sofa.

Pundits say the music-game genre is dying. They may even be right. (Nice work, Activision.) But there’s still room for a flagship rhythm game that shows everyone else how it should be done. As of now, that game is Rock Band 3.

Breathtaking in ambition and crafted with the skill of a studio that's been making music games for 15 years, Rock Band 3 is Harmonix's masterpiece – a towering achievement not just for the genre, but for the medium itself.

If you enjoyed anything from Harmonix in the past, you owe it to yourself to rush out and buy this. Oh, and I recommend the ION Drums if you want to get serious as a drummer – they're worth every penny.

Finally there’s the lovingly curated track list, where Harmonix’s genuine passion for music really shines through. The game offers plenty of chart-toppers and big name acts like Queen and The Doors, but we actually found the lesser-known tracks from bands like Rilo Kiley and The Smiths stuck in our heads even more often. Every song fits the game perfectly, not only because it’s a blast to play but because it’s a joy to listen to. The songs really help to make the whole experience special, and we adore Harmonix for choosing so well.

This is the game for all of you who have a dusty guitar sitting in the back of a closet somewhere that you’re totally gonna learn to play someday. This is for you steering-wheel drummers and you tabletop keyboardists. Rock Band 3 is the best way I know of to take music game skills and turn them into real-world skills. It’ll require plenty of work on your part, sure. All your skills picked up in your years of music gaming won’t help you much here; if games are your only experience playing music, you’ll be starting from square one, learning how to play all over again. That’s definitely going to turn some folks away.

For fans of the series and the music gaming genre, Rock Band 3 is a must-buy, simply because it’s unsurprisingly the best iteration in the series yet. It’s not only going to replace similar and competing games in your music library, but it makes them look downright dated in comparison.

Rock Band 3 is a major jump forward for the series. The series makes a big jump away from being a toy. The new Pro Instruments and modes will be welcomed by Rock Band fans of all skill levels. If you have a young gamer or even old gamer who is slightly interested in playing a keyboard, guitar or drums, Rock Band 3 and it’s training/lessons are a great place to start. If you are a fan of the series and looking for a new challenge those same pro instruments are a great new challenge as well. Rock Band 3 has truly pulled me back into the very popular and saturated music genre. If you were excited years ago when Rock Band debut you’ll want to pick up Rock Band 3.

Rock Band 3 is simply the best there is in the music genre. I have certainly had my moments were I have been skeptical of the music genre (especially when band-centric games like Rock Band: Green Day and Guitar Hero: Metallica offer little innovation), but Rock Band 3 has certainly changed my mind. This game has done the unthinkable and reinvented the wheel to make music games obsession-worthy again.

Rock Band 3 is a culmination of Harmonix’s efforts to bring music to the masses. But it’s also a new chapter in the franchise that starts the gradual merging of real and game-based music. Plenty of naysayers have already declared music games dead. Harmonix certainly hasn’t gotten the message; this band is primed for a new tour.

In the meantime, Rock Band 3 blows the genre wide open to anyone willing to sit down and give it a go, and with a wide range of skill settings and peripherals to choose from, only the most hardened rock snobs will continue to look down their noses at it. For everyone else however, Rock Band 3 serves as an exemplary rhythm action experience.

So, Rock Band 3 does a whole bunch of really cool things. The problem is the same thing that came up way back in the original Guitar Hero…it’s #%(*ing expensive, but even more expensive than back then. There’s a lot to love about Rock Band 3 and there’s been some awesome DLC already released…it’s just that to get the full experience, you’re going to need to drop some major dollars. I’m planning to pick up a Squier guitar controller when it comes out. But for most people, this is going to be just another rhythm game, and if they really want that, Rock Band 2 is right there.
