Things get really interesting when the larger guys turn up, while the flying nasties must be tackled in an entirely different way. Throw in enemies who are buffed by overhead drones, sniping nuisances, zombie-like horrors, pus-filled exploding monstrosities and the odd boss-like creature and you’re left entirely satisfied. In the Resistance storyline the aliens have switched from using humans to create Chimeran hybrids to simply slaughtering them and Insomniac has managed to convey their murderous intentions very well.

This same tone is apparent during all aspects of the game. The odds against Capelli are overwhelming at all times. The pacing is grueling, there isn’t time to breathe. Capelli goes from one deadly encounter to the next, narrowly escaping with his life. Some of his companions aren’t so lucky. Although, most of the game is spent by your lonesome.

From these rural roots, Capelli must travel by foot, boat, train and VTOL to New York City on a quest to close a Chimeran wormhole opened four years prior, during the climax of Resistance 2. The hole threatens to freeze the Earth wholesale, conveniently making each destination on your whistle-stop tour of the Midwest more lifeless and hopeless than the destination before.

War is horrifying in any context but it’s particularly bleak here; it’s safe to say that things are looking pretty dire for the human race when the third game kicks off. It’s been four years since the events of Resistance 2 and the once thriving human war effort has dwindled down to almost nothing, with pockets of humanity still struggling to fend off the Chimera. This alien menace has begun terraforming the planet to be more like their icy homeworld and, with the appearance of an ominous worm-hole opening up in the skies over New York City, it’s starting to look like Earth is well and truly lost.

Capelli isn’t a super-soldier or a wise cracking badass. He’s a reluctant hero stuck in the middle of a terrible situation. Resistance 3 constantly reminds you of this, from the heart-wrenching decisions you’ll have to make through to the simple reminder of a wedding band on your finger every time you reload your gun or open a door. It gives the game a beautiful sense of fragile human survival against all-odds.

Do you like single-player campaigns? I like single-player campaigns, and on the evidence of Resistance 3, Insomniac Games likes single-player campaigns. At a time when more and more shooters are seeing their story modes shrink in size and importance, used only to introduce the assets you’ll be seeing online, the robust solo portion of Resistance 3 is a welcome return to the days when the campaign mode was the main course, not the appetiser.

As you progress through these areas, the combat situations feel anything but dynamic. Each one is scripted beat-by-beat, with waves of enemies appearing like clockwork whenever you cross an invisible line. The only element that shakes up these sequences is the omission of a regenerating health system. When you’re desperately sprinting across the battlefield to collect a health pickup, it adds a sense of urgency to the proceedings knowing you can’t just duck behind a rock for five seconds.
