PRO EVOLUTION SOCCER 2011 or PES 2011 will reinvigorate the series with the most advanced set of improved gameplay additions, control options and to catch up with the evolution of the real-life football. Central to its total freedom of play, PRO EVOLUTION SOCCER 2011 introduces a power bar for each player that allows the user to determine the exact strength and placement of every pass and shot. Balls can now be spread absolutely anywhere with surgical precision, with long balls into space, short passes to feet and intricate one-twos allowing the player to dictate play and control the tempo of a match.

Matches in PES 2011 offer a much more authentic experience, than in last years game and players are content and sit back and hold on to the ball during periods of possession. However, should you find a gap or go on the counter attack than they’ll suddenly burst into life and speed up field to support your attacking players. But you can’t run around like a headless chicken during matches as the effects of tiring are much more evident then in previous versions of PES. There is one area of play that the developers haven’t quite got right. The ball! It doesn’t always bounce as you would expect and at times appears flat as it can come to a near stand still after a big up field punt. It’s only a minor annoyance but still takes some of the sheen off what is overall a great playing experience.

This year the Master League also goes online, letting you sign players off the transfer list with currency earned for playing others online. Like most online modes, you can’t avoid some questionable tactics, and it shouldn’t be too hard for players to create a stacked team even if they lose a bunch. There also isn’t player development, so this online mode is more of a nicety than a necessity for you to experience.

The atmosphere attempts to be lively although lackluster chants and cheers do a better job of distracting play than spurring on the action. The play-by-play duo of Jim Beglin and John Champion is hardly worth the price of admission though, as generic, disjointed, and often inaccurate commentary can’t be saved by the few moments of well-implemented, contextually accurate analysis.
