There are moments where, jokingly, I told a coworker that it’s very evident that someone at Overkill recently watched Heat (a film that, as a crime/noir fan, I return to annually), and like Christopher Nolan’s opening sequence to The Dark Knight, Payday 2 is an homage to that King of Crime Films. The end result is still something very cool, very fun, and very much worth your time, because I can very easily see Payday 2, like Counter-Strike before it, becoming my go-to source for uncomplicated fun with game-playing friends

Pulling off a frictionless heist is the exception to the rule in Payday 2, but the tension is still palpable as you try to orchestrate a robbery without getting caught, and the adrenaline flows steadily as you inevitably repel the barrage of police waves while trying to make your getaway. The overly expensive upgrade system and lackluster AI could use some work, but the minute-to-minute action is thrilling enough to overcome these complaints.

Payday 2 is a great game when you have the right participants. This is a co-op game, and that cannot be stressed enough. If you intend to go in solo, there is little here to warrant a purchase. However, if you have a regular crew of three friends willing to take on heists with you, there is little else like this experience. Not to mention it is extremely fun when played right.

Payday 2 isn’t a looker, either. We played on the Xbox 360 version and while there are areas that look decent, it isn’t especially attractive. Some areas are little more than grey, untextured blocks too – and if you’re a bit of a graphics snob this will put you off.

It’s just too easy to forgive Payday 2 for looking shonky though. This game isn’t about appearances; it’s about the tension and excitement and thrill found in the heat of a moment. It’s about hard work and co-operation and a well-placed bullet coming together to pull off the perfect crime. If you’ve got a tight team of four bank-busting buddies ready and raring to go, and you can overlook some below-average scenery, you’re in for a hell of a time. Mask up.

Payday 2 is a hugely enjoyable game, and it’s obvious that the developers have thought long and hard about every single aspect of the gameplay, keeping everything that worked from the previous game and doing away with, or improving, all of the other aspects. The opportunity to play the game offline is nice, but the A.I. is often so bad that you’d probably be better off taking on the heist on your own. At the massively cheaper price point (£22.99 on Amazon.co.uk at the time of writing), there should be a decent amount of people playing the game.

That Payday 2 overcomes so many handicaps to emerge, once again, as a fantastically entertaining multiplayer game is a victory in itself. There’s something mercurial at the heart of this series that glitches and bugs can’t erase. It’s still a long way from being the slick, sophisticated crime thriller it wants to be but, with a little forgiveness from the player, this rough diamond manages to shine.

As such, it’s key to stress that your enjoyment of Payday 2 will vary depending if you have others to play it with. The more people you have with you, particularly those you know, the more likely it is you’ll survive objectives and have more fun in the process.
