Need for Speed Hot Pursuit brings the franchise back to its roots with intense cops vs. racer chases. Criterion also ups the ante with the introduction of an all-new online network called Need for Speed Autolog where players compare racing stats and automatically get personalized gameplay recommendations from their friends — a feature that is poised to transform online racing for the connected generation.

Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit may have been a late entrant into the race, but it both grabs the checkered flag for this year and may set a land speed record for this entire class of racer.

Hot Pursuit, like the high-end vehicles it fetishises, has been crafted with genuine care, with great insight, with technical brilliance. Gran Turismo 5 will grab the headlines and the purist vote, but it surely won’t live like this game does; it will be an austere cathedral to Criterion’s joyous modernist structure.

Autolog is cool, but what about the true multiplayer? Is it just as much fun as single-player? The answer is an unequivocal: hell yes. Sure, there are modes that take on a more traditional racing or time trial style, but the developers clearly poured most of their energy into the titular Hot Pursuit mode. Using all the tricks you learned and all the cars you unlocked from the single-player experience, Hot Pursuit pits two teams of, you guessed it, cops and robbers against each other. It’s the most enjoyable experience to be found in arcade racing this year, and it provides that feel through fantastic courses that allow for deep strategic moves, especially when your team works together.

The Autolog feature is also a godsend of an online addition. Most of us don’t bother to look at leaderboards, because let’s be honest, nobody cares if they’re ranked 20,000th in anything. Instead, the Autolog is basically a Facebook wall where you can see who of your friends beat who and what mode, with what car, when and by how much. At any time in the game you can take a picture of the events onscreen by clicking right analog stick and essentially “talk shit†with a screenshot by posting it on a buddy’s page.

Criterion hasn’t rebooted the Need for Speed series, instead taking classic key elements and injecting them with new life for the current generation. It delivers a near-perfect competitive experience, in a way that few games — racing or otherwise — can. Hot Pursuit is not only a defining moment for the series, but for arcade-style racing, period.

Criterion Games’ arcade racing expertise has certainly paid dividends here, combined with DICE’s input, Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit is an absolute essential purchase on both the single-player and multiplayer front. Hot Pursuit is easily the year’s best arcade racer, actually no, it’s this generation’s best arcade racer, and one that we’re glad to stick our stamp of approval on. Strap on your racing gloves and prepare for the ride of your life.

At the end of the day, I have to say that I have absolutley enjoyed playing this game. My measure of a good game is how much time I spend playing it after the third and ostensibly “Just a few more minutes” hollered in response to some kind of spousal demand to do something. Using that scale, Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit achieves a rarely-attained grade of somewhere between “Where the Hell Are You??” and “Put That Damn Thing Down!!” The graphics are gorgeous and the game play is quite addictive. Much as with the game of golf, it’s easy to pick it up and play it, but it requires a lot of practice to get good at it. Improvement always seems achievable, though, which drives (pun intended) to keep on trying.

At its root Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit is about an exotic sense of speed, glamour and action, which it accomplishes on a level we’ve come to expect from Criterion racers. It’s fast, luxurious and recreates that big budget Hollywood chase sequence perfectly.

Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit is pure over-the-top driving entertainment. The cars and environments are gorgeous, the crashes are spectacular, and the new Autolog feature breathes new life into the time-honored tradition of video game competition among friends. The single-player races can become somewhat repetitive and there are some presentation issues, but overall, Hot Pursuit is a blast. If you’re looking for a high-octane racer that grabs on tight but doesn’t take itself too seriously, give this one a shot.

This is a game that fans will not be able to put down and though it may be a little sparse on game modes, it is an experience that racing fans absolutely cannot afford to miss.

It’s a game built round a single mode, in effect, but with its hefty community presence, asymmetrical flex and raw kinesis, it offers more entertainment value than racers many times its size on paper.

Despite feeling like a fusion of Need for Speed and Burnout, Hot Pursuit is still the most exciting title the franchise has seen in a long time. The core driving is never anything but exhilarating, visually it’s almost flawless and the Autolog features are genre leading. There’s still something missing, though. While the high-speed pursuits are up there with the best gaming experiences of the year, the game needs more than that: car tuning, a resemblance of a story – complete with cheesy acting – and a reason to explore the open world. Ultimately, Hot Pursuit could have done with a bit more Need for Speed and Burnout.

Hot Pursuit feels a little too safe for its subject matter, limited by pedestrian road design that doesn’t express all the playfulness that we’d expect in car combat.
