Launching on November 15, Need for Speed The Run lures players into an underground world of illicit, high-stakes racing. The heat is on – and it isn’t just the fuzz who are after you. Entering the race is just the beginning as you blow across borders, weave through dense urban traffic, rocket down icy mountain passes and navigate narrow canyons at breakneck speeds.

And once you’re done with the singleplayer story, there’s a huge range of challenge events to keep you busy, as well as the online multiplayer mode. All your times get recorded to Autolog too, and the game will notify you if your friends beat your time, tempting you back into the driving seat. We didn’t have an opportunity to try this, as none of our friends had a copy. Plus we don’t have that many friends on Origin either (this is an EA game, after all).

Need for Speed: The Run features a pulse-pumping Brian Tyler soundtrack supplemented by a janglin licensed assortment ranging from classic rock to folk to indie to alternative that would be at home on any longhaulers’ track list. Sampled engine noise for each car, tire squeals, gear changes, and the whirr of the tires on the game’s varied palette of terrain is beyond reproach. That said, the game’s directional sound isn’t an adequate replacement for a rear view mirror, but it’s better than constantly tweaking the "look back" button.

Need For Speed: The Run may not unseat Gran Turismo and Forza 4 as a top tear driving/racing simulator, but the Hollywood-style presentation has a lot more charm going for it than I initially expected. Granted, it has a number of issues but like a Jerry Bruckheimer summer blockbuster, The Run is good, mindless fun. Racing purists may thumb their nose at it, but if you’re the kind of person who prefers Burnout over Gran Turismo, you’ll eat it right up.

The variations come from the police and some special events that I would have liked to see more than three times. The police is taken from Hot Pursuit and has the same behavior: ramming in order to wreck you, organizes road blocks and follows you obsessively. The AI is very stubborn, the police cars are tough, but you still get the occasional “cop takedown†with the dedicated cinematic. On the other hand, I really don’t see how a cop in a Subaru SUV could outrun me when I drive a Lamborghini. Yeah, the AI cheats big time.

Need for Speed: The Run is an odd duck. It’s an arcade racer that does some things really well, but is insistent on having you interact at times with a Michael Bay-esque experience (I guess that’s why he was asked to direct that trailer). Like his films, The Run is much more about style than substance. It’s a decent arcade racer, and for those looking for a mindless racing experience, chances are you’ll find something to like here.

Okay, there is one thing that The Run does well and that’s creating an adrenaline-pumped racing atmosphere. Driving through great-looking areas and overtaking other racers at top speed can be immensely fun. At times we even found the AI challenging, particularly when you struggle to outperform your opponents by taking shortcuts, which they’ll often use themselves. Still, we were quickly disappointed in this department as well. Other cars on the track easily make stupid mistakes or simply give in too quickly.
